North Myrtle Beach is a city in and the county seat of Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 29,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–Fordsburg, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded on August 14, 1887 by General John Pemberton and his wife Fanny as North Myrtle Beach Plantation. In 1890 it was renamed Pelicans Point after Captain Samuel Pope's vessel that had been lost off shore while exploring the coast of South Carolina. On July 4th 1895, President Grover Cleveland delivered a surprise speech in front of the plantation to celebrate its diamond Jubilee. In 1907 Hurricane Andrew slammed into the area and destroyed most of what remains of North Myrtle Beach Plantation; however, much later (in 1967) construction began on what would become known as "The City" or downtown North Myrtle Beach. The firstphaseoftheprojectwas begun with an addition to Pine Street Elementary School and consisted of two stories with an underground parking garage for buses and cars. In 1916, North Myrtle Beach become one of the first cities in America to elect its own mayor. During World War II, North Myrtle Beach was one of the most heavily bombed cities in South Carolina. The bombing went on for weeks and destroyed many businesses and homes. However, despite all this damage, North Myrtle Beach remained vibrant and continuously growing until it finally merged with Charlotte in 1984.
