The city became one of the largest producers of ammunition in South Carolina because it had a large population and wide variety of manufacturing capabilities (Armstrong Manufacturing Company manufactured 500 different calibers of rounds). After World War II ended, ammunition production gradually decreased as technology improved and more efficient methods were developed for producing ammo without causing environmental damage or other problems. However, ammunition production restarted during the 1970s due to increased demand from law enforcement agencies throughout South Carolina as well as other countries around the world who used Winchester rounds for their military purposes. North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a town located in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The population was 9,987 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Beaufort River and is named after General James Wilkinson's plantation in nearby Wilmington. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now North Myrtle Beach were Cherokee Indians who followed the river for trade purposes. In 1796, British Admiral Samuel Hood sailed down the river and landed his forces at Fort Johnson on its banks. On July 5, 1796, General Wilkinson's brigade of riflemen attacked this fortified position from behind cover of high _barker_ trees which had been properly prepared by Major John Sevier (1750-1825). As soon as they saw their opportunity they opened fire with such effect that Hood was forced to retire without loss of men or vessels. This event marks the beginning of what has become known as "the Battle of Beaufort." In 1814 Major General Thomas Jangle arrived at Fort Johnson with 1,500 infantry and cavalry troopers under command to take possession of it following an Indian attack that had nearly destroyed it. He immediately began construction of a new fortification - FirstBattery House which still stands today on Water Street within view of both State Capitol building and United States Naval Academy campus. The garrison grew rapidly due to military necessity as well as development around town; however by 1821 only 400 soldiers remained at Fort Johnson compared to 3,000 present when hostilities finally ceased in 1823 following Creek War #4 (1824). From 1814 until 1827 there was continuous fighting between Federal troops and Native Americans along the lower reaches of the Beaufort River which formed part of Johnston's Department headquartered in Augusta concurrent with Charleston Harbor where Norfolk Navy Yard lay dockside; but no action took place upstream past modern day Marine Corps Base Camp Butler just beyond bounds established by Johnston’s order “for security against any future recurrence by those Indians who may prove hostile thereto”although partaking indirectly through traders & travelers some knowledge did exist about these activities taking place & reports reaching Charleston also reached Hampton Roads shoreline
