It is the county seat of Beaufort County and part of the Charlotte–Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Myrtle Beach is located on the mainland opposite Charleston and on the Ashley River. The oldest known permanent European settlement in this area was by means of trading posts established by English colonists in 1699-1800 along the Cape Fear River estuary. In 1793, General James Wolfe's Canadian Expedition occupied Fort Raleigh during their march from Roanoke Island to Charleston before besieging that city for nine months; Robert Epps served as its commander. In 1802, American troops burned HMS "Centurion" near Beaufort Harbor after she had been captured by British forces during a naval bombardment off Cape Hatteras Island; this event became known as "the Battle of Beaufort." A year later, Fort Fincastle was built at what is now downtown North Myrtle Beach to protect it from British attack while also serving as a post office and storehouse. By 1860, there were over 100 dwellings in North Myrtle Beach and its vicinity. A railroad station was opened in 1876 and two years later an depot and freight yard were constructed on Iron Works Point (now Main Street). The town rapidly developed due to its strategic location midway between Wilmington andCharleston on one side of the Ashley River and Savannah on the other side – making it one of America's fastest-growing cities during this period. A new courthouse replaced an earlier structure erected in 1881 which had been destroyed by fire; construction began on what is now Town Hall Square withPublic Works Department Headquarters adjoining it just south of Market Street in 1886 when town officials decided to move their operations out into what would become City Hall Park late that year following enactment of legislation providing for municipal organization within Beaufort County under one common governance entity – first called “The Municipality” but then changed to “North Myrtle Beach” when city status was granted effective January 1st 1902 following passage of bill number 561 through both Houses Of Congress establishing Municipal Organization District No 2 comprising all or portions thereof lying within said county including any part or portion lying northward beyond said line forming an extremity thereof extending thence inland unto Elizabeth City aforesaid [ Elizabeth City Mills ]; provided further That no property shall be taken from any citizen owning land within said MunicipalOrganization Districts except such compensation as may be prescribed therein for damage done thereby occasioned either directly or indirectly thereto…. On July 6th 1902, Mayor Jno Clements delivered his inaugural address proclaiming that “This new city has come into being—a beautiful addition to our charming community” On December 13th 1909 Union Pacific Railway laid tracks parallel to present day High Street running east-west through downtown serving as a transhipment point for goods coming into Savannah from Wilmington via ironclad vessels moored at Fortress Monroe; today's business district began developing around this intersection…………….. By 1912 there were over 200 businesses operating generating almost $6 million worth economic activity……………………………………….. builder George Washington Smith founded his engineering firm here in 1916……………………………. Many famous people have lived or worked here including singer Patsy Cline (1928-1982) actress Audrey Hepburn (1934-1987), basketball coach John Wooden (1963-2008), NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr (1975-present)…….. In 1960 local physician Dr. J W Marriott became first female doctor practicing outside US.... After Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina August 29th 1990 local resident Dr. Carole Swenson set up shop here becoming Americas first woman doctor certified by US Medical Association…………….. It should be noted that prior to 2000 most employment opportunities were provided through locally owned small businesses…………………………………………………………….. In 2000 Census figures show that population has increased by almost 50% since 1990 reaching 21K residents After Hurricanes Gustav & Wilma many vacated homes leaving only a few families behind…………… Today North Myrleton beach still boasts some great properties if you know where to find them

North Myrtle Beach is a town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 30,752 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1883 and named for Major General James A. North, who served as Commandant of the United States Marine Corps during the American Civil War. It became part of SC in 1983. The first post office opened on May 1, 1883, and was called "Myrtle Beach". It changed its name to "North Myrtle Beach" on December 5, 1923. On February 3, 1898, the first gasoline station in the town opened with 24 gas cans and $2 worth of fuel. In 1906-1907 a two-story brick school house was built and used until it burned down in 1955. In 1914 a large cotton gin and warehouse were built north of downtown by Wm Henson & Sons Incorporated on what is now known as State Road 221A (now US 278). The gin continued to be used until 1934 when it was replaced by a new cotton gin constructed by J C Meyers Co., which remains standing today on South Main Street across from the old bank building that housed it until 1984. In 1925 North Myrtle Beach had its own telephone company which is still active today as Southern Bell Telephone Company (SBT). In 1929 SBT added television service to its line up which continues today as MVNOs Time Warner Cable TV and Bright House Networks Spectrum TV among others From 1941 through 1945 North Myrtle Beach saw World War II with over 100 local men serving in various branches including infantry units (the 15th Regiment of Infantry) located along US 11/US 276 east of town limits; artillery men from Battery Mifflin's 2nd Artillery Battalion stationed at Fort Sumter; Coast Guard personnel from Station VP1 at Kennebunkport Harbor); city employees working for SC Public Service Company doing community work such as mowing lawns for customers or driving trucks to pick up water supplies On January 20th 1946 North Myrtle Beach lost its charter as an incorporated municipality when SC merged into South Carolina under state law creating twelve towns within SC - five more than originally planned - most notably Greenville having been created earlier that year . On July 1st 1957 SBT ceased operations due to FCC deregulation while BB&T Electric Cooperative continued providing service until 1985 when they went out of business too also followed by WCSC Telephones Incorporated who provided service until 1991 when their services were transferred to Comcast Communications before going out of business too

The town was founded in 1770 by General Edward Cornwallis as part of an effort to control the area between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. It was named for British Admiral Sir James Yorke who had helped Crown Prince George secure his independence from English rule in 1814. North Myrtle Beach's first school opened in 1781. In 1824, the city became a county seat and was renamed after Ulysses S. Grant, the general who led Union forces during the Civil War. The city regained its original name in 1886 when it became a state capital.
