North Charleston ( formally known as Charleston, South Carolina ) is the most populous city in the state of South Carolina and the county seat of Anacostia County. The city proper had a population of 298,811 in 2010, making it the fifth-most populous city in South Carolina after Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island and Sumter. North Charleston is located on Ashley River just east of downtown Charleston. The first European to set foot on what is now North Charleston was John Smith during his Expedition from Jamestown to Mount Pleasant on October 12, 1629. He named it "Carthage" after King Charles I of England's recently captured colony in Spain. The first white settlers arrived in what is now North Charleston from Augusta County, Virginia in 1819 by boat; they were led by Captain Simcoe. The first town meeting was held January 10, 1821 at a house belonging to Capt. Alexander McDowell on Ashley River opposite present day Market Street and Broadwalk. The area that became North Charleston was part of Augusta County until 1792 when it was split off to form Anacostia County due to pressure from nearby Georgetown which had become an important slave market. In 1846 – following annexation by Baltimore – Anacostia County lost its autonomy when Confederate General Robert Ebert ordered all counties within Maryland not to interfere with the Union war effort – this included Anacostia County which sided with the Confederacy. As a result most African Americans living within Anacostia County fled or were forced out during operations such as pickets and raids by Union forces throughout April 1861 known asOperation Topeka & Rapidan). Most blacks who remained chose to live near their homes within Anacostia Parish rather than flee into Federal lines where they would have been Subject To Military Regulations And Would Have Been Slaves Again under American rule . The town was named for Captain Horry Butler, who fought in that battle. By 1881, North Charleston had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1889, the first black school was opened in North Charleston. That same year, North Charleston became the county seat of Beaufort County and also adopted its current name. In 1934, North Charleston became an incorporated city with a population of over 30,000 people.
