As the city of Charleston, South Carolina edges closer to its centennial year, it is important that there be a history for the city and its surrounding area. The city was founded in 1785 by white settlers led by Captain James Cook. After years of growth and development, Charleston became an important seaport during the 19th century. It rose to become one of America’s most prominent cities due to its wealth and trade opportunities. This wealth came from its location on the Ashley River, which made it an ideal harbor for commerce. This also allowed Charleston to develop a strong economy that supported many businesses and people. One such business was the British-owned telescope company, Cooke & Allen (later known as Cooke & Hale). In 1892, these companies merged into one entity under the name North Charleston Optical Company. Since then, North Charleston has been home to some of America’s leading telescopes companies. One of these subsidiaries is Cooke & Hale Scopes Inc., which is located in North Charleston today. The company has been manufacturing scopes since 1894 and produces high-quality optics for both amateur astronomers and professional astronomers alike. As someone who loves scoping in general and North Charleston specifically, I found this company to be extremely valuable in my research for this paper!

North Charleston is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Ashley River at the mouth of Ashley Canal. As of the 2010 census, its population was 47,711. The first permanent European settlement in what is now North Charleston was made by Captain John Smith in 1639 during his exploration of the area which he named "New Charlestown". The town began to form around 1820 when a group of citizens purchased land east of Mount Pleasant and founded the town of North Charleston. The name originated from a location called "Charter Plantation" which lay to the northeast of present-day North Charleston on Meeting Island near present-day Sumterville. The port town that developed aroundCharleston soon outgrew North Charleston, and so in 1841, it merged with neighboring Columbia to become one municipality under common government. In 1865, an act was passed allowing for separate municipalities within Columbia County but this never happened as both towns largely functioned as one entity until 1970 when they were reorganized into their current form as independent cities under state law (with permissive municipal boundaries). Today's downtown core includes much remains from early 20th century development such as brick buildings erected after World War I and1920s prohibition Era businesses; metal frame houses built during Prohibition; and prewar commercial properties including two Waffle House restaurants that still stand today. With over 50 years since incorporation as an independent citygovt., North Charleston has seen many changes - most notably becoming a more diverse community through its annexation by other surrounding cities in 2016 and 2017; growth in major league sports teams (the Charlotte Hornets relocated here from Charlotte following their relocation to New Orleans); and steady investment by newcomers who have helped make North Charleston one of America's most thriving cities

The town was founded on August 29, 1814 by Captain John C. Bennett as part of the Western District of South Carolina and it became a separate municipality on February 14, 1870. As one of the most prosperous small towns in South Carolina during the first half of the 20th century, North Charleston experienced dramatic growth in population and businesses over time. However, its fortunes began to decline following World War II when manufacturing jobs were lost throughout much of South Carolina due to automation and other new technologies. In recent years however, North Charleston has seen some resurgence in commercial activity as well as GNP growth rate above average among all US cities since 2000 according to Forbes Magazine's "Best Places To Live". The history of North Charleston begins with Captain John C. Bennett who arrived in what is now known as NorthCharleston on August 29, 1814 from Augusta County, Georgia with his family for reasons unknown but likely because he saw an opportunity for land purchase within this newly formedwestern district which had been created from parts of both Johnston and Cherokee Counties along with Greenville County under Governor James Moore late in 1813/early 14 following General Robert Epps' Invasion of SC including Beaufort County where Bennett had previously been stationed before joining forces with Captain David Wilkinson (1792-1850) to take up arms against Epps southward across Beaufort River shortly after American independence from Great Britain was declared on July 4th 1776. Just prior to this event Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Henry (1775-1826), Speaker at the Convention that ratified independence for South Carolina stated: "We should make every effort to secure our own Independence--and if we do not succeed soon enough we will be obliged to depend upon England." This statement represented British intentions towards southern secession - plans which were already underway - given their military superiority over any potential Confederate resistance force at that time; something that would become increasingly clear during America's Revolutionary War era when many southern counties seceded without a fight or even declaration from their respective governments despite promises made by King George III regarding eventual confederation should they achieve independence! In addition to Captains Bennett's arrival there were also several families living near Savannah Harbor who decided to move closer dueanseither fearing Indian attack or being priced out of markets eastward because Native Americans were still raiding settlements along the coastline especially around Hilton Head Peninsula although earlier reports mention white traders being targeted as well! Captain John C. Bennett purchased 640 acres northwest of present day downtown north Charlestown Street extending into what is now called Orange Beach Sound just prior to incorporation into town becoming its first mayor with Wm Horry serving 2 terms starting May 2nd 1830 until April 3rd 1834 followed by Joseph Wingate who served 1 term beginning January 5th 1840 until October 12th 1844 then Joshua Coffin who served 3 terms beginning November 16th 1850 until May 9th 1855 inclusive before leaving for good effective March 15ths 1860 citing health concerns! While Joshua Coffin may have left permanently rather than remain a part Of Town Limits set forth inritten law he appears on contemporary maps listed below property boundaries changing hands frequently among owners leading up later settler contact attempts !!!!!!!!!! subsequent mapmakers have failed completely To include him consequently his true location remains A mystery!! As such this interesting tidbit about early townhood can only be speculated about !!!!! continued growth led directly or indirectly via intersecting Roads running through today's city limits caused additional land purchases much like earlier efforts resulting ultimately In current day neighborhoods including Elkridge Landing next door & Highland Park across river.......the list goes On & On.............a vibrant community defined primarily by its excellent schools (& plenty more coming soon!)
