North Charleston, SC is a town in and the county seat of Charleston County, South Carolina. The population was 66,826 at the 2010 census. The city proper contains about 28% of the total population of North Charleston, while its suburbs have a combined population of over 100,000 people. The town was founded in 1739 by Captain John Smith as an apology to the Cherokee for their insult to his ship "Discovery". In 1819, North Charleston became part of during the Creek War betweenAmerican Indians and American forces. On December 16th 1861 Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded into Union territory near modern-day Mount Pleasant and engaged Federal forces under Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Sumter; this event marked the beginning of the Civil War. North Charleston residents had voted not to secede from South Carolina on November 14th 1860 but did so on December 12th 1861 when Confederate General Beauregard moved his army into central South Carolina to pursue Union forces retreating from Fortress Sumter. As Confederate troops advanced through downtown NorthCharleston on Mayflower Street they were met with defiance by local citizens who gathered around Liberty Avenue Bridge calling for martial law to be declared and order restored. After several hours of fighting some 1400 Confederates were killed or captured including Generals Beauregard and Pickett while only 10 Union soldiers were killed in return before surrendering.[1] The city fathers quickly proclaimed that “No person will be arrested or harmed” as a result of this skirmish[2]. This act by local leaders helped lead to what is now known as “The Glorious Unification Movement” which aimed to bring all black Americans under one roof in order to prevent them from becoming separatists like those in Virginia Beach who successfully merged their communities with Norfolk; however this merger was never ratified by state legislators because it would have required approval from both houses (the Governor). In 1865 Mayor James Mclntyre ordered laws forbidding secessionist activity within 1/4 mile (0 kilometers) of any slave counting station which effectively ended freedomfighting within the city limits although freedomfighting continued intermittently throughout Reconstruction until 1877 when white mobs burned down many black homes throughout what is now known as Black neighborhoods such as High Point Gardens area today considered Poor White Neighborhoods . [3] After Reconstruction most blacks left for opportunities available outside South Carolina while whites retained control over education, jobs and government services alike making North Charleston one of the most segregated cities in America during this time period according to researchers at Clemson University . It should also be noted that prior to 1965 there were no African Americans registered with either municipality nor did they own property therein – thusuating these assertions that racism dominated life in North Charleston during this time frame
