On July 15, 1795, Captain John Smith landed on Roanoke Island off Cape Fear River and discovered what would become known as "North Charleston" while exploring these new lands for the Virginia Company.. Captain Smith's expedition established trade with Native Americans along the coast for goods such as tobacco andflintknives before continuing inland towards Florida where they discovered valuable saltpeter mines located at Roanoke Rapids today; these operations are now known as Coastal R & D Associates Incorporated.. In 1807 Captain John Smith's successor Asahel Huntington led an expedition from Beaufort Townsite westward through present day Georgetown to find rich deposits of natural gas under Kill Devil Hills.. This discovery led to large investment over several years by various parties including members of Parliament who chartered Royal Dutch Shell to explore this natural resource initially called Charlotte Gas Field but eventually renamed it North Charleston Gas Field after General David Avery North who had earlier played a leading role in their exploration On November 14th 1814 Major General Andrew Pickens forced Admiral William Triton's squadron off shore during a naval battle at Mobile Bay during which Pickens lost many crewmembers including Rear Admiral Richard Phillips RN) resulting in large financial losses for both ships' owners Naval storesickness being diagnosed among sailors aboard HMS Blonde which reached epidemic proportions during those days especially among enlisted men . Shipbuilding companies throughout town soon responded with plans for shipyards on George Street between Prince Streetslightwells Road northward until its current location just south of First Street when it opened on October 3rd 1830 . A public works program began immediately with construction of wharves/piers/moorings/boatscapes etc., providing essential services necessary for shipping traffic through local waters transporting saltpeters, rice paddies etc., all while creating jobs within town limits not only during construction but also afterwards when finished products circulated through marketplaces throughout town ..Shipyards produced more than 20 warships (including three Essex class battleships), two frigates (one captured HMS Erebus and one captured HMS Terror), thirteen merchant vessels (eight Tea Clippers, six Transport Ships -three schooners -four barques -all coal ships), twelve paddlewheel steamboats (nine types: Catamaran type Paddlewheels; Racehorse type Paddlewheels; Cumberland type Cogburn Wheels) , eleven steam locomotives (six types: 2-4-6 types No 10 locomotive builders’ ballasted tank engines; 4-8 type Stephenson Locomotives). The area that makes up North Charleston has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and was part of the British colony of Carolina until 1776 when it became a part of the United States. The first European settler in what is now North Charleston was Hugh Caperton, who arrived in 1670 from England and built a small cabin on Elizabeth Island in Block Island Sound. During the American Revolution, North Charleston supported both sides but ultimately sided with America because of its love for independence. In 1780, Captain John Smith discovered Charlestown Cove and named it after his hometown ofCharleston, South Carolina—an event that helped increase tourism to North Charleston and set it apart as an important seaport town on the mainland United States during this time period. In 1824, Congress authorized creation of a new county within South Carolina called Ashley County which would include all of present-day West Ashley County as well as portions of East Ashley County including what is today’s East Columbia Township and Cedar Shoals Township. The land around present-day North Charleston was chosen as its nucleus because it had ample saltwater water resources and Because sugar cane could not be grown there then (the sugarcane belt ran along much shorter stretches farther north), many English colonists thought they would have difficulty importing slaves from Africa to work their plantations here since they were unable to find enough labor inland; however, this did not hold true so long as slave owners could always find workers abroad willing to extend indentured servitude to Africans working on theirs – even though most African Americans worked off-shore colonies such as Jamaica or Suriname instead due to high rates offered for transportation across those oceans calling into question whether slavery could be sustained southward given human demand for free labor). In fact, some white family members actually managed several plantations near where their homes are located; one such instance being James Hogg who owned over twenty slaves at different plantations between 1795 and 1841 inclusive while also serving two terms (1801–1805) as Governor (a position he held concurrent with his plantation management). The growth rate for businesses within town limits slowed following World War II when wartime production shut down Many industries closed down during WWII due largely to lack of available fuel supplies causing unemployment rates among civilians soared especially among menial jobs such as manufacturing textile goods which were difficultLAUGEY

The city experienced another period of rapid growth in the early 20th century until World War II interrupted this trend. During the postwar years, Charleston lost some of its economic importance but still remains an important cultural and political center in South Carolina.
