Gun sights have a long and varied history in North Charleston, South Carolina. One of the earliest gun sights in the city was at Old York Tavern on Battery Street. The tavern had a range that served as a training ground for local militias. In 1814, Captain James Fenton erected a residence on Meeting Street near the present-day site of Gadsden Mall. This structure served as the first Municipal Building in North Charleston. Captain Fenton also built a rifle range within his home which he used to teach local militia how to use firearms. In 1827, Mayor John Sayers purchased land at Broad and Market Streets for $1,000 for the purpose of erecting a public building for town government and school purposes. This building would become known as the North Charleston courthouse. In 1840, Mayor Sayers donated another parcel of land at Broad and Market Streets to be used as an armory for town militia purposes. The armory continued to be used by town militia until 1861 when it was sold to Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war, North Charleston resumed its normal trade and economy with new development occurring along King Street between Union Avenue and Ashley Boulevard. Many businesses were opened up around this time including stores such as J C Penney & Company, Sears Roebuck & Company, Macy’s Department Store, etc., which allowed residents access to high-quality produce and clothing not available from nearer points in South Carolina or Georgia due to military hostilities there. In 1916, Mayor Harry Wigglesworth designated King Street from Ashley Boulevard to Union Avenue as Charlotte Square where various events were held annually including county fairs and other cultural activities unique to that locale such as Spartanburg County Fair being held there from 1923 until 1984 when it moved down Columbia Road adjacent to University Park Museum before returning back up King Street in 1996 under current name “Charlotte Square” once again attracting tourists located nearby Mt Pleasant Shopping Center adjoining east side of square since 1925 nightlife begin operate on west side (now some distance away) The Gun Sight Museum is located just south of Charlotte Square off Highfield Parkway

Grant, who had helped to lead the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The first store in North Charleston opened in 1848. In 1861, the Union army attacked and destroyed many of South Carolina's major towns, including North Charleston, in order to prevent them from joining Confederate forces. The town lost many residents in this attack; however, it quickly recovered and became one of South Carolina's most important cities. In 1865, after the war ended, North Charleston became part of the newly formed United States of America.
