During much of the 20th century, military defense contractors such as Raytheon operated out of local homes or barracks near US Naval Station Jackman and nearby Naval Air Station Whiting Field. These companies attracted high-quality employees who helped support local neighborhoods by performing technical work at home or away from their families for extended periods of time. Some remain active today including North Charleston Electric Cooperative (NCEC), which has worked with customers since 1888; Hendricks County Recycling Solutions; and Hector’s Pizza Shop & Donuts which was founded in 1955 by Homer “Hector” Medrano Jr., also known as "The Godfather" of Pizza Delivery inCharleston County
