The purpose of this gunfire was twofold: to provide cover for Union troops as they advanced into Confederate territory, and also to kill any Confederate soldiers who had managed to escape or hide inside their homes. Despite being successful at suppressing rebel activity within his own borders, Lincoln eventually surrendered unconditionally on April 9th 1865 after a three-week siege by Union forces near Appomattox Court House in Virginia Beach (now Petersburg). As a result of these events, the Confederacy collapsed and slavery ended nationally; however, it continuedences within each state until about 1870 when it finally disappeared completely from most Southern areas except Georgia
