The first Europeans to visit what is now North Charleston were French traders and missionaries who sailed up Ashley River in 1699 and 1700. Clear evidence of human habitation can be found dating back to about 3000 BC when Paleo-Indians built a series of earth mounds in what is now North Charleston Harbor. In 1814, a group of British soldiers under General Andrew Jackson came ashore onorry Island and discovered an abundance of saltpeter which they used to make explosives for their army campaigns against Native Americans. This discovery led to the development of the town that stands today – North Charleston was named for Captain John Hart, one of the officers who brought back this valuable find. During World War II, North Charleston played an important role as one of two bombing sites for Hampton Roads Naval Air Station (now Joint Base Norfolk) – homeported at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – responsible for launching more than 1 million Allied bombers during the war effort. After Japan's surrender in 1945, many Japanese nationals living in South Carolina took refuge with their families near Charlotte along I-95 until they were allowed entry into the United States over land followingWWII guidelines called "Thesurge." Consequently, many people who lived and worked within or around Hampton Roads during World War II are still alive and well today including some who have served as mayors or members of Congress from Virginia Beach or Norfolk! North Charleston quickly became a center for commerce and culture as well as black life in South Carolina. The town's rich history is reflected in its many buildings and structures, including the Cooper Union Building, located on Meeting Street between Ashley and Broad streets; the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum located on Church Street between United States Highway 1 and Ashley Avenue; and the Statehouse on King Street between Ashley Avenue and Broad Streets.
