North Charleston, South Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the county seat of Beaufort County. The population was 89,605 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in South Carolina. North Charleston is adjacent to Columbia, SC on land that was first settled by English colonists in 1639. The two cities are linked by Interstate 95 and Interstate 295. The area now known as North Charleston was first settled by English colonists in 1639 after they arrived onshore from Bermuda with goods collected during a voyage sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh. The town name may have originated with an early settler named Nicholas de Champlain who named his farm "NewCharleston". German settlers arrived later and called the area "Hochstadt" or "Hohenschönhausen". In 1881, sections of Beaufort County were annexed to Spartanburg County, creating what is now North Charleston. North Charleston grew rapidly during the late 19th century as Methodists established churches and businesses along its wharves for shipping goods around Cape Fear River; coffee beans grown near Georgetown; cotton plantations near Latta Plantation; and lumber mills along Itshiepaug Creek. By 1920, over 50% of all textile production in South Carolina took place within one mile of downtown North Charleston. During World War II, local residents used their skills to produce munitions such as gasoline tanks and airplane parts while also helping build airfields key to the Allied victory against Nazi Germany. After the war ended, many civic organizations emerged including OneAmerica Financial Corporation (now American International Group) which moved its headquarters from nearby Columbia into what is today's Civic Center Plaza; Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Manufacturing Company (now Lockheed Martin), which relocated its plant from Pee Dee Island into what is today's Downtown district; and Coca-Cola Bottling Company (later PepsiCo), which built a new bottling plant at present day Broadwalk Shopping Center located just east of I-495 exit 9A off US 401). The rapid growth of downtown did not stop when interstate highway 95was built through centralizing much of what had been shipped out to make way for it: several high-priced housing developments followed close behind including Capitol Hill Crossing ()–the largest development west of I-95 ();[4] Waterfront Drive (),[5] Riverside Boulevard (),[6] State Street (),[7] Lenox Square (). These developments resulted in increased traffic congestion on I-295 due to increased vehicle separation distance between northbound laneslanes west of Historic West Point Lookout Road ()–a distance that has since been shortened via widening—and southbound laneslanes east of White Sands Boulevard (). In order to alleviate this problem—and promote multi-modal transportation options such as bike/walking trails—the federal government created ramps connecting I-295 northbound laneslanes with both state highways 9L()–which runs parallel to Waterfront Drive()—and 9R(), running concurrent with Lenox Square(). This project was completed in 2009 after more than two decades worth design work.. The city experienced another boom following Hurricane Florence which hitSouth Carolina on September 12th 2017 leaving most parts devastated but thankfully no fatalities reported
