The company reached its peak within two years with more than 1,500 black men working under direct supervision from their owner-drivers across 12 miles (19 km) of track between Greenwood Plantation on Hilton Head Island (now known as Beaufort), southward along the Ashley River towards Block House Point on Johnston Island (now known as SC 117), then eastward along Beaufort Harbor until they arrived at Port Royal Plantation just outside modern-day North Charleston aboard HMS Enterprise on July 3rd 1807; their workers would later be counted as part of the initial 7th Regiment Colored Infantry U .S .A .
