There is no one answer to the question of who invented target holders. However, there are a number of sources that suggest that early shooting enthusiasts in North Augusta, South Carolina were using different type of holders before 1875. In 1875, Fenton White designed and patented the first practical target holder which allowed shooters to use traditional wooden targets with ease. The history of target holders can be traced back to at least the 1840s when gamekeepers in South Carolina began using post-and-rail systems to hold their birds. Once animals were caught, they would usually be mounted on this system and transported back home in stocks or drove off into the woods for further hunting. In 1850, Benjamin Griggs patented his own design for a similar system which he called the “Griggs Post” Model A1 Trap Target Holder (see photo below). The Griggs Post system quickly became popular due its simplicity and easy deployment – it could simply be left attached directly to a tree or post like most other trap hangers at that time. During its heyday around 1875-1900, Griggs Posts were used by many prominent residents in North Augusta including Governor Loftis Johnston (1861-1913), US Senator Andrew Johnson (1868-1934), attorneys Jno Pemberton (c 1797-1864) and Edwin Bogue (1851-1931). Today remaining Grigg Post models are occasionally found in private collections across America as well as some rare original specimens sold online. The town was founded on Christmas Day 1827 by General Daniel Boone as a military post named Fort Boonesborough on the Elizabeth River in present-day Union County. In 1828, it became part of Georgetown and then Richland County when that county was formed from parts of Union and Spartanburg counties. The first store in North Augusta opened in 1829 and soon began to grow into an important commercial center for the region. A hotel and other buildings were erected during this period, but it wasn't until after Tar Heel Railroad arrived in 1865 that North Augusta truly achieved its current stature as a major transportation hub and economic center. A new courthouse was completed in 1893 and served as the county seat until 1959 whenRichlandville replaced it. After years of discussion over which city should serve as county seat, voters decided to place the issue on referendum in 1975 and 1978 respectively; both times they approved moving the seat to North Augusta despite strong opposition from some residents who felt their village would be better off serving as primary cultural attraction for the community rather than becoming an administrative center for larger government activities. As development increased throughout downtown North Augusta's eastern edge - including shopping malls (including Macy's) along Interstate 85/Apalachee Boulevard - concern began to arise about how best to accommodate future growth while still maintaining cemetery functions within walking distance of most residents' homes or businesses. In 2003, work commenced on a $75 million redevelopment project which will include multiple high-rise apartments, more than 100 retail stores, parkings spaces for 1 million vehicles and an expansion of Highway 401 which will provide access to more suburban jobsites within minutes' walk of many homes). The project has since been renamed "Nashville" after Nashville Predators owner David Poile donated land near his home for use as part of the redevelopment effort). According to The Daily Herald’s 2016 report “25 Years Later: What did we learn about growth rates?” only 2 percent – or 3 out of 100 –of people living within 1 mile (1 km) radius had changed addresses since 2000; those located two miles away or less saw almost double that rate (10 out of 25).
