In 1897, North Augusta acquired land east of the river for what would become its current city limits; this acquisition increased the population size to over 200 people by 1910%. During World War II, North Augusta served as an airfield for the United States Air Force during both Allied and Axis campaigns in Europe; it also produced munitions for the war effort.
The first white man to set foot on the present day North Augusta, South Carolina was a slave trader named John Fenton in 1775. The first permanent white residents of the area were African Americans who came over as indentured servants during the early 1800s. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama and founded Fort Jackson. He also built a cabin near what is now North Augusta for himself and his family. The town began to grow around Fort Jackson and soon had a store, school, Methodist church and other community amenities. In 1846, Fort Jackson was destroyed by Confederate troops during the American Civil War. As a result of this event, many of the African Americans who had come over as indentured servants left the area and never returned. In 1887, local citizens petitioned Congress for permission to form a town government within their boundaries. On November 7th of that year, North Augusta became an incorporated village under the name of "North Augusta" with a population of just under 100 people. The original Town Hall still stands today in downtown North Augusta. Over time, various businesses have opened up in downtown North Augusta including restaurants such as Citadel Coffee House & Bakery and Jaxx Liquor Store which has been since 2007 located at 620 Market Street in Downtown North Augusta
