The area now known as North Augusta was first settled by the Cherokee in the early 17th century. In 1814, the U.S. Congress voted to annex Georgia into the United States, and North Augusta became part of that new country. The town was named for General James A. Gordon, who had served in the Mexican-American War and helped lead Ulysses S. Grant's army to victory at Battle of Gettysburg in 1864. Gordon is also credited with leading an attack on Confederate forces at Second Lieutenant Hill's Mill on July 8, 1862, which led to Union victory at Second Lieutenant Hill's Mill. North Augusta prospered during Reconstruction following the Civil Rights Movement; it became a center for black culture and education. The town experienced significant growth during World War II; its population increased from 10,000 to 30,000during the war years alone. After the war ended, North Augusta lost some of its importance as a community due to suburbanization and increasing competition from larger cities throughout South Carolina. However, it has continued to experience modest but steady growth over recent decades; today it has over 100 thousand citizens and is one of South Carolina's most populous towns
