North Augusta is a town in Lee County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Augusta is located on the banks of the Neuse River and ZIP code 29512. The first permanent settler in what became North Augusta was David Williams in 1824. By 1827, John Salyer had come to live here as well. In 1829, Benjamin Fenton laid out a townsite on land that would become North Augusta proper. A post office was established at North Augusta in 1830, and by 1838 it hadgrown to include all of present-day Lee County. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in South Carolina with his army and set up camp near modern-day downtown North Augusta for two weeks before moving northward into Union territory. On July 16th he ordered his men to burn down several homes along Main Street; these were later rebuilt as part of what is now called "OldeNorthAugusta". Jubal's order also led to the nickname "Burning Burt" because so many homes were destroyed that there was no way for people living within earshot to escape without being burned alive or worse. On October 9th 1861, during Confederate forces' attempt to cross over the Neuse River into Union territory from adjacent states (and subsequent occupation by Union troops), an estimated 1,500 rebels attempted unsuccessfully to storm a Northern gunboat anchored at its mouth just upstream from where North Augusta now stands. This attack has been widely regarded as one of the largest amphibious operations mounted against Federal forces ever undertaken; it effectively ended Confederate resistance on both sides of the river while inflicting significant losses on Confederate commanders and men) As early as 1800s Native Americans inhabited this area according to local historians; they refer to this area as "Watauga Lake." In 1814, North Augusta became the capital of South Carolina. The city hosted many important events during its time as the state's capital, including the first election to the United States Congress and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. After South Carolina seceded from the Union in 1861, North Augusta lost its status as a city and slowly declined in importance until it was abolished by local ordinance in 1972.
