The Town of North Augusta was founded on February 14, 1838 by white settlers from Scotland and Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to the area during the American Revolution. It became a full-fledged city on April 1, 1959. The first post office in North Augusta was established on February 14, 1838. The town's name is derived from an Indian word meaning "the place where the sun sets." The original inhabitants of this area were the Cherokee people. In 1795 Anglo-Americans began settlement in what is now Richland County and name it North Augusta after Mount Pleasant which they saw as their future land holdings. In 1807 General James Wilkinson took command of Union Army forces invading South Carolina and ordered his troops to march through North Augusta Pass into central South Carolina to await orders from General Robert Ewell. On July 12th Wilkinson's force encountered Confederate forces under John Mosely at Battle of Cowpens which resulted in a disastrous defeat for Union forces that left more than 100 men dead and over 400 prisoners taken captive including Wilkinson himself. As a result of this disaster Ulysses S Grant ordered him replaced as commander of Union Forces in South Carolina with Gideon Welles effective August 15th following the battle at Blackwater Creek near Camden which also ended up resultsing in heavy losses for Confederate forces led by AYVON LORD Dunmore who lost 507 men and 5 cannons while losing only 2 guns! Aftermath of Cowpensbattle1807 On October 10th,1810 an act was passed Congress calling for $5 million dollars to be appropriated for military operations against Seminoles living within or adjacent to Georgia proper including northwest Florida including present day Alabama and Mississippi! This allowed Major General Andrew Johnson who had been named Commanding Officer Southern Department to invade Florida with 4 divisions totaling 509 officers and men under his command! On December 8th he crossed into Georgia territory capturing Tallahassee without battle on January 6th!! AftermathofCowpensbattle1810 One possible explanation for why there were no significant engagements between American & Confederate troops during our early skirmishes outside our doors may have been due to powder shortages caused by ongoing conflict with Britain & Spain over control of WestFlorida!! One thing is certain; America would not have lost if those hostilities hadn't continued
In 1870, the first white settlers in what is now North Augusta, South Carolina arrived. The town was named for General James Longstreet, who fought in the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1871. In 1902, North Augusta became a county seat and remained that way until 1971 when it was consolidated with Jasper County to form Beaufort County.
