North Augusta is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–Fort Mill Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Augusta's history dates back to 1827 when it was established as a small frontier settlement by Col. John Byers and his family from New York City. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee made his headquarters here before moving south to Montgomery County, Alabama. After the war, North Augusta became an agricultural center with large farms used for cattle and cotton production until the late 20th century when it became a bedroom community for eastern Spartanburg County residents and businesses. The first permanent settler in what is now North Augusta was Col. John Byers who arrived in 1827 from New York City on horseback and named it after himself and his family’s home near Syracuse, New York –present-day Albany (on Long Island). The Byerses were among the earliest Euro-American settlers in this area and their farmstead remains today as one of the most significant structures in town’s early history: it still stands on State Road 842 just east of downtown North Augusta (just off US 1), visible from Exit 9 of I-95 northbound adjacent to Myrtle Beach International Airport). From what we could see they seemed contentedly living off hunting & fishing etc., not wearing any clothing other than some women carrying baskets or children walking behind them bearing poles

However, within a few decade the town had begun to develop into an important commercial center due to its location and access to resources. By 1825, North Augusta had become one of the most important agricultural communities in South Carolina. It became an important hub for trade and commerce due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Columbia River which made it convenient for shipping goods both inland and outto sea. During the late 19th century, North Augusta experienced significant growth thanks to its proximity to larger cities such as Savannah and Charleston. This growth led to increased job opportunities and more people moving into the town which helped make it one of South Carolina's most vibrant communities during this time period.
