North Augusta is a small town located in the southernmost corner of South Carolina. The population was only 1,471 at the 2010 census and it is the smallest municipality in the state. North Augusta owes its existence to two railroads that connected this area with other parts of South Carolina. One of these railways, the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, was destroyed by fire in 1892. However, another railroad, the Yadkin and Manchester Railroad, continued to operate until it was sold to Norfolk Southern Railway in 1980. This made North Augusta an important junction for truck traffic between eastern South Carolina and western Georgia. The town has a long history as a cotton plantation center. In 1851, John Cone purchased 3 miles (5 kilometers) of land east of town from Fayetteville Plantation owner James Hays. From here he began harvesting cotton using slaves who had been brought over from Africa by his father-in-law, Colonel Samuel Johnston Jr. For many years North Augusta was one of the largest cotton plantations in south Carolina because its soil yielded more cotton than any other location in the state. In 1861, during Confederate America's war for independence against America's Union army, General Robert Ewell ordered his troops to march on northumberland County through North Augusta into what would become Kershaw County. The battle that ensued there is still considered one ofthe pivotal moments leading up to seceding from America and forming their own independent nation called Confederate States of America (CSA). Aftermath: More than 200 men were killed including 30 American soldiers; 100 black Africans died also during this event known as "The Battle at Northumberland". There were 1,953 housing units at an average density of 158.2 per square mile (63.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%.
