In the early 1800s, North Augusta was a thriving community and seat of government in what is now South Carolina. The town was established on the eastern edge of present-day Augusta County by white settlers in 1786. In 1821, North Augusta became one of the original nine counties in South Carolina. At first, firearms were not allowed in North Augusta because it was considered an agricultural society with low population density. However, after passage of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1791, gun rights began to be granted to civilians living within the boundaries of South Carolina from then on. North Augusta, SC is a town located in Jasper County, South Carolina. The population was 2,745 at the 2000 census. North Augusta is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted on November 1, 1859 by Capt. John Ritchie and Jno. Burtchall as "Olde Augusta." A post office was established in 1867 and remained in operation until it closed on December 15, 1951. On May 12, 1886, James Henson became the first white person to be killed by Indians in what is now North Augusta when he and three other men were attacked by Chief Cephus during a reprisal for raiding his people's camps near Lake Hartwell. The attack led to increased Indian attacks against white settlers in the area and after several years of sporadic violence between whites and Indians the two groups merged into one force under Chiefs Sekoua (1892-1910) and John Witherspoon (1910-1920). In 1927 an act of Congress created Cherokee County which encompassed all of Jasper County east of US 11 and all but 2% of Saluda County west of US 11. This left North Augusta with only about 3 square miles (8 km2) land area while Cherokee county had over 17 square miles (45 km2).
