North Augusta is a city in Androscoggin County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 11,591 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Androscoggin County after Myrtle Beach and it is the largest city on the Brunswick Peninsula. North Augusta also includes six rural counties which make up its eastern border. The town of North Augusta was founded by white settlers in 1827 as a landing place for traders on the Savannah River during what became known as the Georgia Period of American history. In 1868, when Bute County was created from parts of Androscoggin and Aiken Counties, North Augusta became part of Bute County. That year, Confederate General Robert E. Lee came to town to surrender his army at Appomattox Court House before being transported back to Richmond through Witham Creek Bridge over the Savannah River and then by rail to Lynchburg Virginia. In 1865, following Union victory at Gettysburg and Lincoln's inauguration as president that year, many Northern Virginians decided to move southward and find new opportunities in what had become known as "the New South". Among these newcomers were young James Culp who purchased land near present day North Augusta from Avery Wade in 1866; Daniel Boone Tidwell; John Tyler Lewis; Asa Hodge; Jeptha Settle; Levi Coffin (1825-1907), owner of Oneida Hill Plantation near present day Gastonia ; Julius Caesar Pickens (1811-1882), owner of Pickens Island plantation where he raised cotton until within sight of Greenville SC; George Washington Carver (1863-1941), inventor who developed cornmeal into a food item first used commercially by Americans in 1914 In 1870–71, two years after Wades purchaseaniel land adjoining that now forms downtown North Augusta east of Interstate 85/ US 301*, two schools were built: one for black children called Tuskegee Normal School (later renamed Tuskegee Institute) while white students attended Industrial Arts High School across I-85/US 301* from 1871 until 1973†††*‡‡“It has been said that education played an important role in general development here – both black and white – leading eventually to success both economically and socially outside Ofallon Township limits” A group led by Amos Staley purchased 640 acres adjacent to modern downtown North Augusta from Thomas Dixon Johnston for $2 million†††*‡‡ early 20th century before selling it again¶¶¶ In 1925 they donated all but 139 acres including most current downtown area along with Marietta Road between US 501W & I-85/US 301E Kannapolis Avenue becoming municipally owned remaining property includes original buildings including school building still standing today among others Historic Triangle Park located on mostly prewar lots just off Main Street NW corner facing I-85 Industrial park now defunct once larger industrial park located about 2 miles SW cornerof Airport Blvd., Northwest side opposite airport now housing apartments shopping center

During the late 20th century, North Augusta experienced economic decline and social turmoil due to its proximity to Clemson University and its high crime rates. In 2013, North Augusta voters passed a resolution declaring November 3rd "National History Day" in order to celebrate its history.
North Augusta was founded in 1785 by the British military officer, General James A. Macon. The town was named after General Macon's older brother, Sir George Augustus Macon. In 1802, North Augusta became a town and in 1838 it became a city.
