North Augusta, South Carolina is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General John A. North in 1859. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now North Augusta was Captain William Hance who built a cabin on the site of present-day town in 1827. In 1829, Captains Neeley and Hardy erected a log stockade around their cabin to protect it from attack by Cherokee Indians led by Chief Bowles. In 1830, Captain Neeley's son Daniel built a large frame house on the east side of what is now Main Street and laid out streets into it in 1831. The first post office opened in1835 and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1865 due to lack of mail traffic. In 1840 Major John Troup established himself as an attorney and land agent near modern day Highland Park with his family farmstead which became known as "Troup's Farm". He served as Postmaster for Spartanburg County from 1840 to 1850 when he moved to Goose Creek where he practiced law until his death in 1862. He had three wives: Sarah Duncan (July 9, 1794 – May 20, 1861), Mary(Fenton) Brownell (June 15th or 16th c1833 – December 11th 1863), and Martha Ballard Douglass (March 12th [or] 13th 1865). From this marriage two children were born: James Troup Troup (October 25th 1800 – September 3rd 1901) who married Flora Wofford October 26th 1851 and Anna Maria Troup Garnett (November 6teenth 1853 – January 2nd 1888) who married Ridgely Knox March 22nd 1870 After Major Troup's death his widow sold their farmstead to Rev Jonas Burchfield who resided there until his death on February 8, 1889 which left the property undefended since he did not have any children of his own biologically related to it after Major Troup’s death . After Rev Burchfield's death several people took up arms against him over control of the property; among these were Confederate soldier Cephus Griggs Sriracha whose father owned part of the landRev Griggs leased back ownership interest MCMahon & Co., heirs apparent theretoometime between 1893/4and 1898/9 through purchase from them by Mrs Hinton Rector also known variously as “Mrs Grafton” or simply “Hinton” bought back all title deeds associated with that lease thenceforward considered vestedowned thereby forevermore under joint management by herself alone james grafton troup
