He named the land "Ayer's Fort" and built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1821 John Coker settled on a small island near present-day North Augusta with his wife Sarah and their six children. They renamed the island "Coker's Island". In 1827 Colonel Nathan Hale moved his camp from Macon to within two miles of where North Augusta now stands and began construction of Fort Hale which he called "Hale's Castle". In 1830 James Caldwells settled on an uninhabited tract of land between present-day Spartanburg County and Allegany County along Peachtree Creek as part of plans to create what would become Greer County. He named it Caldwell Township but changed it to North Augusta in 1840 because then-Governor Thomas Jancey had recommended that name be given to all new counties created during his administration.
