North Augusta is a city inorry on the Ashley River in South Carolina, United States. The population was 30,827 as of the 2010 census. North Augusta is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now North Augusta were English traders and missionaries in 1699. This area became part of Plantation Carolina under British rule before becoming American when George Washington took over for Britain in 1776. The town was named for Captain Johnstone's store at present-day Gastonia, North Carolina, which had been founded by Captain James Johnston in 1775. The first post office called "Newburgh" opened on July 10, 1814, but it was renamed "Northampton" on November 9, 1828 after Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne (1763-1847), one of the founders of Greensboro, who donated land to make this town possible. In 1831 the name change again when a new courthouse and jail were built on State Road 3 south of town. In 1865 Union General Jubal Early camped near present-day North Augusta while invading South Carolina during the Battle Of Hope Creek and subsequent campaign known as The Backlash; so much damage had been done to local homes that General Early ordered all civilian property be burned rather than rebuild it due to public outcry at his actions. I n 1984 Widespread Panic played their final show at Township Hall before moving into Lakefront Stadium across from Shaw University where they would play until 2006 According to NCSU Alumni magazine "Widespread Panic: An Oral History", drummer Barry Melcher said about their final show there "It was an honor just being able to end our career there [...] It'll always be felt fondly because we were able to do something really special for those people [the students]". Soil tornado struck downtown on April 15th 1997 causing extensive damage with some buildings destroyed or severely damaged including Town Hall which housed both the high school and county courts until it was razed after being saved by its more experienced counterparts Wilmington High School & Fire Department who also renovated much of downtown including restoring streetlights which Credit Union Park now features

North Augusta (formerly known as "Newburgh") is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,846 at the 2010 census. North Augusta is part of the Columbia, SC micropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now North Augusta were French Huguenots who arrived in 1699 and named their new fortified settlement after the small French town of Notre Dame de l'Arizona on the James River. In 1775, when Charleston was burned by British troops during the American Revolution, many patriots from surrounding counties fled to North Augusta for safety. As a result of its strategic location between Charleston and Savannah on one side and Savannah on the other and its close proximity to rice plantations on the rice river estuary, North Augusta became an important commercial center during much of 19th century South Carolina. In 1828, Newburgh's post office was established; it continued operation until 1886. At that time it was moved to Richland County seat Fayetteville because that is where court proceedings were held at that time. The primary industry in early days was agriculture; however, since there were no mills then nor are there now any extant cotton plantations within walking distance of North Augusta proper (nor does farming provide much economic activity), today most residents raise food animals or sell products from their homes - such as eggs or fruit - directly to consumers or through local farmers markets. During World War II there was significant production by munitions plants located adjacent to town limits including: RCA Victor Corporation's Brunswick plant which manufactured television sets; PPG Industries' Plant No 1 which manufactured artillery shells and mortar rounds; Bethlehem Steel Company's Plant No 2 which made gas turbines for heavy bombers; Bechtel National Corporation's Plant No 3 which produced oil drums for shipbuilding purposes; all these plants closed following World War II but remnants remain across several municipalities within Richland County today- Brunswick being particularly notable due to its lengthy reign as America's largest producer of televisions using polypropylene material (the product has been replaced entirely by plastic). In recent years some people have become interested in restoring those former factories with plans currently underway to turn them into "industrial villages." This project would see residences erected onsite within each factory while also creating a visitor center/research center adjacent thereto which would explore various aspects related to munitions production throughout history including how they've been developed over time as well as current day uses/uses in modern times
In 1879, a group of farmers in the area organized to form a town. The name was changed to North Augusta and the town was founded on December 12th of that year. In 1902, North Augusta became an incorporated city and in 1960 it became a county seat. On January 1st, 1979, South Carolina merged with neighboring Georgia to form the United States of America and North Augusta lost its status as a county seat.
