North Augusta is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,924 at the 2010 census. North Augusta is home to the North Augusta Naval Air Station and two sister naval air stations: Charleston International Airport and Beaufort Municipal Airport. The town's name comes from an early settler named Northumberland who arrived in 1775. The first permanent settlers in what would become North Augusta were James Wilson, John Crain and their families who arrived in 1779. In 1819, Edmund Burritt purchased of land that included present-day North Augusta from Sir Walter Raleigh for $1,000. In 1828, Burritt donated another tract of land to the town for use as a public square. On January 1, 1865, during Confederate General Robert Ewell's raid on Fort Sumter which led to the surrender of the garrison at that location (the event known as "The battle of Sumter"), Union forces burned down Burritt's house and store buildings in retaliation for his donation to the Confederacy. In 1887–88 a new courthouse was built on Main Street by contractor Aiken & Hardin and opened by Judge John Witherspoon —the first African American justice of South Carolina Supreme Court...On October 1st 1903 when Marion Winthrop became president ofSouth Carolina due to Abraham Lincoln's assassination she ordered all public services including education be suspend until further notice because her state had not yet ratified the TwentyThird Amendment which granted voting rights to African Americans...When Winthrop died on November 15th 1903 her will directed that all four acres southeast of High School Road be dedicated as a park with a playground,...In 1922 when school unification occurred throughout south carolina there were many questions about north augusta being part of south carolina should it become just another city or should it keep its own unique identity? When finally after much discussion it voted 3-2 to become just another city within southern carolina we can thank our mayor david davis for pushing through this change
The town of North Augusta was founded in 1824 by General James A. Hammond and his army following the Battle of New Bern. The town grew rapidly, becoming a principal center for trade on the eastern coast of South Carolina. In 1852, North Augusta became the capital of newly organized South Carolina. The city continued to grow in popularity until the late 20th century, when it experienced significant decline in population and economic significance.
