As one of the most rural and conservative communities in South Carolina, North Augusta has a rich history. The area was first settled by British colonists in the late 17th century, and its name comes from an early settler, Abram North. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century as a result of its location on the Savannah River and its access to white goods and labor. In 1868, North Augusta became part of the newly formed state of South Carolina, and it continued to grow quickly until World War II when it lost much of its population to military service or relocation. Today, North Augusta remains a small town with a strong agricultural economy that reflects its origins as a Workman's Village. The earliest inhabitants of what is now North Augusta were Native Americans who lived along the Savannah River in what is now Upstate New York. In 1692, English settlers arrived in present-day South Carolina looking for land to settle. They received permission from King George III to explore the area but never officially founded anything here. Instead they built cabins scattered around present-day Georgia before sailing back upriver to Nassau County on Long Island Sound in search of new land. In 1775, French traders discovered some oil wells near present-day North Augusta while exploring the region for potential holdings in East Florida; this led to increased interest in this area among British colonists and Scotsmen who had settled downriver along the Savannah River since Queen Anne's War (1702-13). By 1778, over 100 people had gathered at Sunbury Court House near present-day Pee Dee Junction for what would become known as "the Convention." This meeting authorized British Columbia Colony Governor John Montresor to purchase 5 square miles (12 km²) east of today's town center and adjacent farms from Indian Chief James Macon for $1 million with title deeds dated December 3rd edition 1st year of our Lord 177[1]. This section begins about two hundred pages into my paper so I will not go into too much detail about Sunbury Court House which only served as a gathering place for colonial officials intent on making deals without actually going through parliament or buying any property outright! Anyway back at Sunbury Court House there were representatives from Nova Scotia [Canada], West Indies [now Trinidad & Tobago], Virginia [USA], Georgia [USA], Great Britain [UK] – all sorts of different people interested in what was happening next door! And we all sat around hashing out how best we could help our friends down south… Basically it was just another day at Sunbury Court House…sorta like Parliament but without lawyers or anything! On October 26th 1778, Sir Henry Clinton issued orders authorizing Colonel Edward Cornwallis to begin construction on Fort Cumberland on Catawba River opposite modern day Brunswicktown which would serve as both an army post and naval base during America's undeclared war against France[2]. The main goal behind these fortifications was protecting Charleston([SC]), then one of England’s primary trade centers due largely to French presence throughout southeastern SC[3]). However because Fort Cumberland could only be accessed by boat following rapids near Duckworth Shoals,[4]) development proceeded slowly until after America’s independence from Great Britain In 1814[5]). After years of debating between England and America over whether or not Fort Cumberland should be built(!), Congress finally ratified an ordinance establishing Jacksonborough Parish within territorial boundaries on November 7th 1821[6]). Because Jacksonborough Parish lay within Cherokee Nation territory at that time(!), militia companies were also ordered forthwith under commandof Colonel David Granger located northeast corner Shawanee Creek Settlement thenceforward known as “North Augusta” accordingto General Andrew Johnson...It should be noted that neither house still stands within present day town limits although some reconstruction has taken place! On November 3, 1828, the first slaves were brought overland from Africa to North Augusta. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created South Carolina. In 1835, Wilkinson gave land near present-day downtown to the town for use as a public square.
