It was initially called the M16 and it saw service during the early days of the United States military. It proved to be a very popular rifle, and it quickly became one of the most common firearms in use throughout the world.
North Augusta is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Augusta was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a town in 1857. The nearby towns of Summerville and Greer were also founded in 1837 and 1857, respectively. As late as 1910, there were still two other towns in Sumter County besides North Augusta- Uniontown and Magnolia- both established before 1880. In 1930, the last vestige of white settlement ended when all but one family left for good after the infamous Maycomb Fire destroyed most of what had been their homes and farms. Today, North Augusta remains a small town with limited services available to its residents outside of its downtown core which is home to the only grocery store in Sumter County as well as several businesses that support local agriculture including a nursery/fruits&veggies cooperative and a dairy farm. Despite this limitation however, it has managed to maintain its unique culture which includes an annual festival called "Festival Friday" which features popular music from around the world along with traditional arts & crafts from locals. There are also several amusement park offerings within walking distance of North Augusta such as Six Flags Over Georgia (just south of town on US 27), Kings Island amusement park (just east of town on I-85) as well as several smaller theme parks scattered throughout the area such as Cedar Point Amusement Park (just north of town on US 421), Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (just east off US 1) and more recent additions like Six Flags Hurricane Harbor (just northwest of town on SR 521). These attractions are often combined into one large attraction orpark known simply as "Six Flags".

In the late 1700s, North Augusta was a small town on the banks of the Ashley River. The town was founded by George Ashley and his wife Elizabeth in 1798. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its natural resources. By 1825, North Augusta had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1829, North Augusta was renamed Ashleyborough after Governor John Ashley. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1850 when it had a population of 5,009 people. However, by 1860, Ashleyborough had shrunk to just over 1,000 people and the town declined thereafter. In 1930, North Augusta merged with neighboring towns Laurens and Sumter to form the new city of South Carolina Ramseur. Today, North Augusta is a small community located about 15 miles north of Columbia on I-95W. It is home to a few hundred residents who live near their farms or businesses along the river that separates them from Clemson University and Greenville County’s largest city of Spartanburg. While many aspects of life have changed since 1800-when Ashleyborough was one small village-the history of thissmall community offers insights into some important facets of American culture during that time period as well as South Carolina’s development as an agricultural state during that time period
The town of North Augusta was founded in 1785 by George and Hannah Hilton. The first settler in the area, John White, erected a cabin on the present day corner of Main and Second Streets. By 1800, North Augusta had a population of about 20 people. In 1802, the United States opened up the South Carolina Territory to settlement. A group of men from North Augusta formed a wagon train to explore the territory and determine its potential for colonization. About 60 men set out from North Augusta on April 12, 1802, including James Gadsden and his brother George Gadsden Jr., who would later become signers of the Declaration of Independence. They traveled through what is now Sumter County before reaching Columbia on May 14. On November 3, 1804, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 33rd president of the United States with 54 percent of the vote in South Carolina. In 1860, Union forces invaded South Carolina while Confederate forces defended it against an attempted invasion by General Robert Easley. On December 16th, 1861 ( four days after Lincoln's assassination), Union troops stormed into town and burned down all but one building in downtown North Augusta during what is known as "The Burning Of The Town." It is estimated that between 100-300 people were killed or injured during this event
