In 1836, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1974 when it was combined with neighboring Greenville to form the new County of Columbia. In 1887, North Augusta became one of two towns in South Carolina to recognize women as citizens. In 1907, an ordinance passed by the Town Council establishing schools for children 4-16 years old authorized white male students from other states who were residents of South Carolina to attend these schools and receive instruction in English and history. On February 26, 1911, the new City of North Augusta was organized with a population of 1581. On July 1, 1961, the City merged into the County of Columbia with its present borders
