Newberry is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Newberry is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Combined Statistical Area. Newberry is located on a bend in the Ashley River, about southeast of Spartanburg and east of Greenville. It lies on a plateau that slopes gently to the river below. The elevation ranges from 1,362 feet (430 m) above sea level at its lowest point to 2,914 feet (711 m) at its highest point. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,052 people, 1,521 households, and 910 families residing in the town. The population density was 501 people per square mile (234/km²). There were 1,684 housing units at an average density of 269 per square mile (114/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% white and 3% black or African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%of the population. There were 1,521 households out of which 36% had children under 18 living with them, 58% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present; and 24% were non-families. 20%of all households were made up of individuals and 6% had someone else live alone who was 65 years old or older. They were developed in the early 1800s by various riflemakers in order to increase accuracy and improve shooting performance. Later, more sophisticatedscope mounts were created for muzzleloader guns and other types of firearms. The roots of today's scope mount industry can be traced back to 1821, when British Rifleman John Lanchester designed the first recoil-operated telescope mount. This mount used a small calibre cannonball as an aiming point to adjust magnification while firing a shotgun or rifle. In 1826, Scottish Rifleman James Macdonald designed and built the first fully reflexible (non-rotating) scope mount using complications from his design patent #2, which remains the most advanced telescopic sight mount ever made. In 1831, American Rifleman George Stephenson invented the first self-contained reflexive microscope turret that allowed users to view detailed images at high magnification without having to remove their glasses or wear any special equipment. Newberry is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census, down from 1,715 at the 2000 census. Newberry is located on U.S. Highway 278 and State Route 158. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Newberry was Alexander McGillivray who arrived in 1799 and built a cabin on the present day site of Newberry. He named his home "Newbern". In 1819 Captain John Moseley purchased land east of where Newbern now stands and laid out a town square that still exists today as Main Street. In 1831 Drury erected a schoolhouse which served as the local public school until 1958 when it was replaced by Spartanburg High School which still stands to this day. In 1847 Daniel Boone set up shop near what is now known as Mount Pleasant in what would eventually become Spartanburg County; he called it Boonesborough after himself and his wife's family name (Boone). After living there for some time he decided to move back to Kentucky but left behind his herd of cattle which were later bought by Jeptha Blythe who donated them to nearby Clemson University where they remain today as one of the main attractions on campus! In 1903 large sections of downtown were destroyed by fire caused by an electrical short circuit which destroyed much property including Old Main building which still remains standing today! The original post office moved from its original location near Tryon Square into what is now known as Post Office Building #2 just north of First Street in 1907; it remained here until 1949 when it moved into its current location across Post Road from Fairbanks Drug Store! The first store owner/manager/employee ever hired was Mrs Anna Henson who began working at Post Office Building #1 in 1907! Over time many other businesses have opened up around downtown such as Weaver’s Clothing Store, African Americansmithy & Jewelry Emporium (now White Stone Market), Southern Pimento Cheese Company, Cook’s Pharmacy & Restaurant, Dollar General Department Store etc., making downtown one big hive of activity! Today you can find plenty of restaurants inside and outsidePost Office Buildings #2&3 along with several small boutiques unique to this area like Judy’s Antiques or JC Penney ! Downtown also has several churches including First Baptist Church (which continues to function today as an active church) and Christ Episcopal Church located just south side Main Street next door to Post Office Building #1
Newberry was founded in 1827 by Colonel James Newberry and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the then-new state of South Carolina. Newberry quickly became a thriving community, with a population of around 100 people in 1830. By 1850, the population had grown to over 500 people and the town had become an important stop on the road between Charleston and Savannah. In 1854, Newberry voters approved annexation into Confederate States of America, which made it one of the first towns in South Carolina to do so. The town continued to prosper under Confederate rule, thanks in part to its strategic location on two dirt roads that connected Charleston with Savannah. In 1863, after Confederate forces were defeated at Gettysburg, Newberry's status as a prosperous local community ended abruptly. As part of Reconstruction efforts following the war, the US government began Reconstruction efforts in South Carolina by providing financial assistance and land grants to local communities such as Newbery
