Newberry is a small town in the southwestern corner of South Carolina. It is located on the Hiwassee River, about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Columbia and 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Clemson. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The history of Newberry dates back to 1819, when Captain James Cook landed here with his ship HMAS Discovery on his first European journey. His exploring party included Dr. John Fenton and Mr. Jemison, both of whom later became missionaries in Newberry's earliest days. In 1828, Rev. John Brown preached here from an old white Baptist church which had been abandoned in 1799 near present-day Clemson University; this early preaching led to the erection of a new church in 1829 by subscription among local citizens. In 1860, Mrs. John Coker erected a frame school house for $900 that still stands today; it was one of only three buildings in Newberry then dedicated to educational purposes (the others being a Methodist Episcopal Church and an Presbyterian Church). In 1861–1862, Colonel Isaac Brockman conducted military operations against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell during the American Civil War; as a result, many soldiers who were stationed at or near Newberry enlisted in the Union army and fought as part of General Brockman's brigade during that conflict. After hostilities ended in 1865, most residents left for various reasons – some because they wanted more access to education than they had available back home; some because there was no market for agriculture where they lived; others because Reconstruction policies made it difficult for longtime Confederates to reintegrate into society after their defeat. One resident who remained until her death was Myra Jane Roanoke (1872–1964), daughter of Congressman Elijah Roanoke Sr., one of South Carolina's longest serving legislators and its first female member elected statewide since Reconstruction began two years earlier! Mrs. Roanoke played an important role not just within her own community but also within national organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and AA sponsor groups across America which helped recovering alcoholics find sobriety and new identities beyond their use or abuse within their families/clients/dependents/addictions themselves! Her work with these groups has been well documented by researchers including author Don Coyne & investigative journalist Chuck Baldwin! For many years she served as trustee emeritus on the board chairing The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Foundation based out of Columbia SC where she continues today working tirelessly providing leadership & support programming aimed at preventing addiction from taking hold throughout our communities

Newberry, South Carolina is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is located on the Hiwassee River and was founded by Loyalist colonists in 1779. Newberry had a population of about 1,000 in 1900. The village's only store closed in 1978 and most of its residents now live within the community of Newberry Landing adjacent to the river. Newberry was founded in 1790 by Lieutenant Colonel John Newberry and his wife, Sarah. The town became a post office in 1836. In 1852, the town incorporated as a city. Newberry is now the county seat of Union County.
