These fields were used extensively by the United StatesAAF during World War II for fighter aircraft training; many operational variants of these types were designed here at Beckham Field #2 particularly those leading up to McDonnell Douglas' F4U Corsair series fighters Introduction of jet engines into military aviation led to increased use of these airstrips both by USAF pilots flying propeller airplanes as well as ground-based trainers such as Navy Thunderbirds that flew out from nearby Willow Grove Army Airfield during exercises such as Operation Neptune Spear In 1946, Beckham Field #2 became known as Edwards AFB when General Electric Aviation Corporation transferred its research activities formerly conducted at Flying J Flight School there to Edwards AFB thenceforth becoming known simply as GE Aircraft Research Center As Boeing began operations at GE Aircraft Research Center adjacent thereto on October 1st 1956 under Contract NoAF 9055R/26F/5C,[3] Edwards AFB continued serving also as home field for McDonnell Douglas Phantom IIs operated out of nearby Slaughter Shoals Naval Air Station through 1960[4]when that facility closed following development at nearby Wright-Patterson AFB concurrent with that general's move Newberry has multiple shops located throughout their center; several are open year round including one called "The Rugged Shop" which offers hunting supplies along with some other interesting items like old guns dating back to Revolutionary War times!
