Newberry is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Newberry is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. Newberry was founded by General James H. Wilson and his wife Eleanor on November 12, 1821 as a small hamlet on the banks of the Santee River. It was named for Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Newby (1798–1865), who had served with distinction in the American Revolution and under Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War. The first store in Newberry opened its doors on October 16, 1825. On May 5, 1830, President Andrew Johnson signed an act authoring the creation of Pickens County and giving it to Samuel Fenton for its development as a county seat. In 1835, Isaac Asa Hutchinson purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) of land east of present-day Newberry from Colonel John Pritchard for $100 gold pieces. Hutchins donated this land to become what is now known as Hutchinson's Hill Park within present-day Newberry limits. In 1860, John Aiken became president of Confederate States Army during the American Civil War and ordered all military functions to be moved from Montgomery to Fort Sumter so that soldiers could more easily rest and eat without fear of being searched or captured by Union forces. This caused public outcry throughout South Carolina and led to Aiken's removal from office two weeks later after criticism from Governor Thomas Groomer Sr.. Aiken finally resigned his commission on January 12th 1865 following protests by state legislators over his actions at Fort Sumter rather than reports that he might have been involved in treasonous activities while serving in the Confederate army.–See also: "John Aiken: both sides" On February 26th 1865 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Charleston Harbor accompanied by Admiral David Dixon Porter; Sherman explained that he was there to investigate any links between local businessmen Richard Mulkey (of Kingston & Company) and Confederate Major General Hardee Swett; Porter replied that there were no such links but added that he would like to speak with all residents about their business practices.–See also "Sherman arrives in Charleston"
