Newberry is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. Newberry is the county seat and it is part of the Columbia City School District. Newberry was founded in 1785 by General David Hunter as a post office on an estate he owned called "Pine Grove". The post office name changed to "Newbery" in 1834 and to "Newberry" in 1878. It was originally named for General James Wilkinson Newbery. The first white settler was John Savage who arrived in 1793. He built a cabin on what is now known as Old Hickory Road and took up hunting there until his death in 1800. His widow, Sarah Savage, established a trading post here with her husband's supplies from North Carolina. They traded furs, slaves, corn, tobacco and other goods until 1818 when they removed to nearby Pee Dee Island where Sarah continued to trade until her death in 1827. On January 6, 1865 Newberry became part of the newly formedRichland County when it was created from parts of Davidson and Kershaw Counties. As one of its early industries newberry flour mills were started around 1880-besides many other small businesses such as groceries, feed stores and churches that continue today including the Wednesday night market which moved into its current building on Main Street in 1984

Newberry, South Carolina is a small town located in Greenville County, South Carolina. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. Newberry is the smallest town in Greenville County and has the distinction of being one of only two towns in the county that was not founded by white settlers. In 1793, John Newberry and his family moved from Georgetown to what is now Newberry. John's father, James Newberry had settled in Georgetown in 1750 and his grandfather, Nicholas Newberry had also been active there. James' older brother Daniel moved from Georgetown to join him there about 1800. There are few records of early life in this area so much as memories of when people would go out into the wilderness for hunting or fishing trips which would take them three days or more away from their homes. The first white settler in what is now Newberry was George Washington who arrived there on May 9th, 1793. Washington's party consisted of four men including Washington himself and he named it "Newburgh." A post office was established at Newburgh on October 16th, 1819 with Wm.[sic] P[hilip] Stroup as its first mail carrier and until 1830 it served as an ender post between Georgetown and Columbia River Ferry Landing onCOLUMBIA RIVER without ever reaching its destination! In 1827-28 David Whitfield constructed a sawmill on Saw Mill Creek which turned out to be one of the most successful businesses during that time period due to its high productivity level; however Whitfield went bankrupt within five years because he could not compete with larger mills built by other entrepreneurs around that time such as Hugh Ketchum & Co., D[avid] Fenton & Son etc.. Whitfield's mill still stands today although it has been greatly modifications over the years primarily for agricultural purposes rather than industrial use!
