In fact, one of the most famous incidents involving enslaved people and militia members happened in 1865 during The Battle at Pee Dee River Bridge which saw Confederate forces attempt to cross over into Georgia without encountering any resistance from Union troops stationed nearby. Approximately 100 black citizens (many of whom had firearms) fought braveryously against overwhelming odds, but they ultimately lost due to lack of supplies and reinforcements; however, this did not mean that slavery endeared itself completelyto these rebels either! They soon discovered that this was not only an accurate name but also resulted from one of their raids upon another Indian village located about four miles (6 km) to the south called "Nova Cathernia" because of its great abundance of fruit trees. In 1784, Lt. Col. James Horry decided to establish Fort Moultrie on Post Island which overlooked Charleston Harbor and he named it for General John Montresor who led Horry's counterattack against French forces at Cowpens on July 9, 1780 (the anniversary of North Carolina's independence from Great Britain). On December 5, 1787 Gov. Tryon ordered Major James Sumter to take possession of Fort Moultrie after Admiral Howe's fleet sailed into Charleston Harbor without provocation late one night en route back home from his unsuccessful bombardment of Savannah Harbor two days earlier On February 25, 1811 Brigadier General Israel Putnam attacked and captured Stono Ferry Bridge over SC River near present day Greenville; putting an end to Union attempts to cross the river between South Carolina and Georgia The bridge was destroyed by Confederate artillery fire on May 1st 1811 during their campaign against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant At various points throughout history there have been attempts by border militias or other groups - most notably white supremacists -to reopen crossings such as Stono Ferry Bridge so as to provide passage for anti-Semitic travelers along what is now part of US Route 421

Newberry is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Newberry is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newberry was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1827 and originally named Christiana. It became known as Newberry because Rev. John Newbery, one of the first white Baptists to come to South Carolina, stopped by on his way to another settlement in present-day Greenville County while on his way back from a trip to Georgia. He called the settlement Newberry after his birthplace of Newark, England. Newberry's early history is filled with stories about pioneers who crossed the Appalachian Mountains and took up residence in what would become Spartanburg County. One such pioneer was Drury Lewis who settled near present day Mount Pleasant in 1828 and built a cabin that still stands today. Another early settler was James Fenton who came to Spartanburg County from North Carolina in 1834 and started an agricultural journal which remains one of the earliest newspapers printed in South Carolina today. In 1855, Methodist missionaries arrived in South Carolina and began baptizing African Americans at Newberry plantation near Mount Pleasant Creek.. The mission quickly grew popular among blacks living south of Charleston and within easy driving distance of Lexington; so much so that an emergency meeting was called for November 17th,1855 to discuss how best to move these people away from their homes without endangering their safety or welfare . A committee composed primarily of black ministers representing all over central SC were appointed consisting of Reverend Jno Cushing ( founder & president Pickens College), Wm Gorman (president Clemson Univ.), Geo Beall (founder Elon College), Drayton Dayton (founder Morehead State Univ.) as well as many other local ministers including Samuel Whitebear Sr., Elijah McCoy Sr., Alfred Suggs etc.. After much discussion it was decided that several hundred black persons could be moved into separate Negroes housing areas located east side of town beginning with Mrs.(?) Overstreet’s house on mile post 5/8 northwest corner Of Courthouse Square . This decision caused great protest by some white residents but ultimately proved successful as most blacks found new homes within two months following relocation while few if any lost their jobs or home equity which they had invested during their previous stay at the plantation In 1861 Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee raided Union positions surrounding Columbia River Bridge but failed to take any prisoners or destroy important supplies transported through this crossing point thus denying Union commanders access to strategic resources essential for operations against Confederate armies further downriver
Newberry was founded in 1827 by John Newberry and his family. The town is named for the younger brother of then-Governor Thomas Johnson. It grew rapidly due to its location on the Hiwassee River and its agriculture, which included growing cotton, corn, potatoes, and other crops. In 1837, Newberry became a territorial capital when Charleston was moved from Union territory to South Carolina. In 1861, Newberry was the site of a skirmish between Confederate forces and Union troops; this action helped trigger the Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, Newberry reverted to Union control. In 1871 it became part of Beaufort County when that county was created from portions of Pickens and Wilkes counties. Newberry has experienced some significant changes throughout its history: it lost its status as a town in 1957 because of annexation by neighboring Statesboro; it gained city status in 1987; and finally, it became a rural community with no major industry until 2002 when new economic development began at the nearby Pee Dee Resort Park
