The history of guns in Newberry, South Carolina goes back to the early 1800s. The first guns were brought over by the Loyalists during the American Revolution. After the war, many farmers and military veterans began using firearms to protect their property and families. By 1836, there were at least five gun stores in Newberry. In 1842, a law was passed that made it a felony to sell or possess any gun without a license from the sheriff. This law was designed to control gun trafficking and proliferation. By 1853, there were six gun stores in Newberry and shotguns had become popular among farmers and other rural residents. In 1855, a store called The Arsenal opened up on Main Street. It was one of the earliest businesses in town and functioned as both a grocery store and shooting range for local citizens. In 1865, another store called The Gunsmith closed down due to financial troubles. However, this didn’t stop people from starting their own businesses; within two years, three more stores had opened up around town: The Rifleman’s Shop (1867), The Pistolero’s Store (1868) and finally The Shotgunner’s Shop (1869). Throughout these years,gun ownership continued to grow in Newberry; by 1870 there were at least 12 businesses operating in town with over 100 customers apiece! Eventually, new regulations were put into place following the Charleston shootings of 1860 which led to an increase in violence against unarmed civilians across South Carolina townsfolk – including those living in isolated rural communities like Newberry. As a result of this increased crime activity, lawmakers passed new laws regulating firearms in 1871-2 which further tightened restrictions on handgun ownership throughout the state . During this time period also saw an increase in knife use as well as theft from homes related to shotguns and knives – both of which became increasingly difficult for law enforcement officers to combat given their lack of firepower compared to handguns
Newberry is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Newberry is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Spartanburg County were led by Captain James Cook and his men on their exploration of America in 1778-79. They left behind a letter from Cook describing an area they had visited called "Newberry" and its inhabitants who were "savage." In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through the area during their march to reach the Atlantic Ocean. General Johnston's army invaded South Carolina that year and found Newberry abandoned while its inhabitants fled into the woods. A group of farmers returned to find their homes burned down and all their crops destroyed; they rebuilt everything within a few years using local materials and labor. In 1825, Captain John Sikes founded a trading post at what is now known as Sikes Point on Hilton Head Island which became one of the most important ports for exports along the Savannah River during this time period. In 1830, Newberry was incorporated as a town under Spartanburg County government with a population of only 125 people. It soon became known for its millinery trade due to its many miles of winding roads leading to the mills located thereabouts. The first school in Newberry was built in 1836 by Mrs. Sarah Gibbs; it was eventually renamed after Increase Moultrie, one of South Carolina's most distinguished public figures who served as Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War During Reconstruction following slavery's abolition in 1865-1868%. The school closed in 1903 but reopened as part of Greenville Regional High School system in 1988 when Greenville Township merged into Spartanburg County Municipality

After being moved from its original location in 1828, Newberry finally achieved its current location on Mount Pleasant Street in 1894.
