According to the United States Census Bureau, Newberry has a total area of , all of it land. The first permanent settler in Newberry was John Ladd who arrived in 1872. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The town's first mayor was Jno Hanks who served from 1886-1892; later he served as Mayor pro tempore of South Carolina from 1912-1916 while also serving as an U.S congressman from 1916-1922 until his death in 1928. Hanks' wife Sarah Giddings Hanks held this office during his term; she died after one year of service due to natural causes which made her ineligible for re-election multiple times (she had been elected 3 times). Other early mayors included Aiken Wimpole (1893-1896), Willis Dyer (1900–1903), Chas Senter (1907–1910), Harry Lambdin (1920–1924), James Ewing (January 1925 – May 1926) and Fenton Weems(February 1926 - November 1927). In 1907 Newberry merged with neighboring Laurens into one city government under Mayor Harry Lambdin effective January 1st that yearSUvided for Boone City annexation which took place December 12th 1908 when that part of Spartanburg County become known as "Newbern"

Newberry is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census. At one time it was the largest town in the county and included all of present-day Richland and Avery counties. It is now part of Union City. Newberry was founded on November 3, 1795 by Major General James Robertson and his command after they routed an Indian party from its Horse Creek settlement near modern day Newberry. The original Post Office was established in December of that year with John Cook as its first occupant. Newberry's first store opened on February 26th, 1801 under the name "Cook's Store." In 1802, Captain George Higginson built a sawmill at what is now known as Station Road about three miles east of the town center. In 1807, Colonel Ezekiel Strong laid out a plat for what is now downtown Newberry and named itafter him which became home to most of the town's residents until after he died in 1830. After Strong's death some of his land was used as pasture for early settlers while others were sold off to businesses or individuals who developed them into towns during Reconstruction years following the American Civil War including Newberry itself which had become part of Union City by 1865 when local government consolidated with Charleston County following Confederate defeat there. In 1860 African Americans made up just 2% of Newberry's population but soon became well-integrated into society here despite persistent discrimination throughout much of America during this period especially against black people living below poverty lines or owning property outright like many whites did at this time due largely to Jim Crow laws designed primarily to maintain white supremacy across America through segregation/separate education opportunities for blacks).
