Newberry is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. Newberry is located on the eastern border of Spartanburg County and is bordered by Greenville to the east, Anderson to the north, and Laurens to the west. Newberry was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1785. The town was named after General James Newberry who fought in the American Revolution as a captain with Virginius De Witt's Regiment of Foot. In 1819, Newberry became part of Unionist South Carolina during the secession crisis that followed Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as President of America. The post office at Newberry was established on December 12, 1820, and renamed Newton on February 2, 1827; it was discontinued on March 4th due to postal reform which eliminated post offices in rural areas throughout America. However, Newberry still retains its original name today and has been called "The Town That Was". In 1865 Confederate General Robert Easley occupied Newton for three days while he raided nearby towns for food supplies; upon his departure most residents left for good but some stayed behind to form a guerrilla force known aspickedearls (later simply Pickens). Aftermath of this raid led newresident John Meeks to found an agricultural cooperative near present day Greenville which remains one of Newberries mainstay businesses today. cotton gin notwithstanding - newberry had more than enough water supply from springs along Beaverdam Creek all through out town during those years! Today many people live outside their homes because there are no public services or flood control available except for emergency response purposes only!

Newberry is a small town in south-central South Carolina, United States. It is the seat of Newberry County. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Newberry was founded in 1827 by General James A. Newberry and his family as a station on the Western (or Cape Fear) Railroad. In 1851, it became a post office under the name of Newberry Station. The first settlers were General James A. Newberry's children, who named their community after their father's birthplace in England. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on a bend in the Cape Fear River and its close proximity to Charleston and Savannah; both cities were major markets for goods exported from South Carolina during this time period. By 1865, Newbery had become an important market town with more than 2,000 residents and had developed into one of the largest communities in central South Carolina. During World War II, many new homes were built in Newbery thanks to American munitions production quotas set by the government; these homes continue to be used today as active military barracks or vacation rentals. In 1978, following years of growth and development within the city limits of Charleston led by Mayor Julius Epps Sr., then-Newbery annexed part of neighboring Sheffield which forms today's eastern border of downtown Charleston - making it one municipality within two municipalities - and renamed itself "Newberry" City Limits Park District #1 because that was all that remained of what once constituted Sheffield Township (now known as Ashley Heights).

By the 1840s, Newberry had become a major slave market and it is said that many of the region's early white settlers were forced to sell their slaves there. In 1865, after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Newberry quickly sided with the Union side. The town soon fell into disrepair following the war and it did not regain its former stature until the 1980s when it was renamed in honor of Dr. James Buchanan Newbery Jr., one of South Carolina's most prominentians.
