In 1865, Confederate forces under General Jubal Early burned down much of downtown Newberry after capturing it from Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewell during Operation Crossroads. Reconstruction began in Newberry following the end of the Civil War and saw increased activity including businesses being built such as a clothing store and bank which still stand today. The most recent incarnation of Newberry began to form when residents moved into new homes following Hurricane Katrina which destroyed many homes in neighboring towns such as Tybee Island and Myrtle Beach but left little evidence behind except for some buildings that were saved or rebuilt. The town started slowly to grow back up until 2009 when construction began on what would become known as "The Hub" which would include several restaurants, bars, shops, offices and more than 100 apartments total within its walls

The Newberries were the first white people to settle in the area. They built a cabin on what is now known as State Route 553. In 1822, they started a small grocery store in the town. It was later moved to what is now called Main Street. In 1830, the Newberries married Clarissa Maynard and had their first child, Elijah John Newberry. In 1831, they bought a farm north of town and started raising livestock there. They also built a house there which still stands today. In 1847, James and Clarissa Newberry divorced and moved back to South Carolina with their children Elijah Jr., Angelina Jane (née Post), Alfred Randolph (Randolph) Newberry, Rebekah Lillian (Lilian) PostNewbery, and James Prentice PostNewbery. They continued to live in South Carolina until their death in 1902. Their son Randolph became an attorney at Lawrie & Kappel LLP in Columbia, SC from 1949-1976
