Newberry, South Carolina is home to the world's second largest powder magazine. The old armory was built in 1881 by J.D. Harrington and is still in use today as the Newberry Armory Museum. It contains over 1,000 cannons, rifles and pistols from all over the world. The first cartridges were invented at a powder factory in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and named after George Washington. They were made of lead shot that was fired from cannon into a wickerwork target to measure how much noise it made. These early cartridges had no explosive propellant and were only good for shooting deer or small game. In 1847, John Brown & Company began manufacturing black powder in Newberry. This new type of ammunition was more effective than earlierpowder types and could be used with firearms that required percussion caps which exploded on impact to fire the rounds. Black powder ammunition became popular because it could be fired quickly and without risk of misfire or damage to other equipment. During World War II, Newberry Armory turned out millions of rounds of .50 caliber ammunition for both American forces fighting overseas and British troops stationed in North Africa and Greece. The first store in Newberry was opened by George Washington Cook in 1824. In 1865, a post office was established at Newberry and remained in operation until 1965.

John Troup moved to Newberry in 1830 from Lexington, Kentucky with his family. He became a justice of the peace and then a state senator before dying in office in 1840. The first store opened in newbery on June 9, 1846 by Wm Henson with 3¢ worth of goods. Another store opened on July 2nd by Pte Henson & Son with 10¢ worth of goods. The first post office was established at Newbery on February 8th, 1850 byHorace Greeley with one letter per week for six weeks service In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned down two stores in town during the American Civil War because they were not authorized to speak English well enough for military purposes - this event is also known as "The Battle of Newbery" In 1865 Union troops burned down two more stores in town during the American Civil War because they were not authorized to speak English well enough for military purposes - this event is also known as "The Battle of Newark" On October 15th 1870 Reverend C Ransom preached an outdoor sermon which raised funds for education projects throughout Spartanburg County The first black person to serve as mayor (1871-1872) was Richard Ligon As early as 1826 James Fenton had patented a slave business he called "Fenton's Plantation". In 1827 he sold all his slaves to White citizens living near him but continued operation until 1830 when he closed up shop due to financial troubles caused by our increase cotton prices following Embargo Act restrictions
