The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Savannah River and its natural resources, which included coal, timber, and rice. In 1819, Newberry became a state capital. In 1865, it was renamed Charleston after Confederate General Robert E. Lee. After the war, Charleston developed into one of the most powerful cities in America. In 1930, Newberry was merged with nearby Greenwood to form the new city of Charleston. Today, Newberry is a small town located about 20 miles north of downtown Charleston. James Newberry's initial investment in South Carolina led to rapid growth in the town and surrounding area during its early years as a state capital. By 1819, Newberry had become one of the most important settlements on the Savannah River region due to its strategic location on an important trade route connecting Georgia with North Carolina and South Carolina. The townsite was situated between two major saltpits – Saluda and Beaufort – which helped support local commerce while providing access to valuable resources such as coal and lumber. However, James' business acumen did not stop there; he also ventured into agricultural production with his own plantation system which produced high-quality cotton fabric for export around this time period. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following his surrender at Richmond Peninsula (now Petersburg), much of southeastern Virginia fell under Union control including portions of what is now South Carolina - including JamesNewbery's namesake town within that state's borders (the name change came about because Beaufort County - then part of SC - seceded from SC during Reconstruction). Although Jnr.'s plantations were destroyed by Union forces upon his capitulation (likely because they were located near Saltville where Union troops pillaged property prior to battle), many others managed to survive thanks largely to donations from friends and family members throughout upstate SC months before that fateful day/ event occurred... many colonists who would later settle in areas adjacent or adjoining present day Beech Creek Valley along I-95 Corridor including those living near Rocky Mount and Ashley City outside Asheville NC settled their families hereabouts while still engaged in agriculture or other businesses Connecting these settlement areas today are numerous roads named after people or organizations associated with those settlements back then like Main Street / High Street / Driscoll Avenue etc One should also Note that virtually all post office addresses/locations mentioned herein were operative long before designation as such by our State Highway Department & continue unchanged even Address changes may occur so please do not be surprised if we list an address/location previously noted but no longer extant @ since it has been relocated somewhere else
Newberry was founded in 1819 by John Newberry and his wife Rebecca. The town came about because of the grants that were given to them by the South Carolina General Assembly. John Newberry, a Revolutionary War veteran and planter, had been granted 640 acres (2 km²) of land in what is now the city of Columbia. He started to build a cabin on the property in 1818, but it didn't become a permanent home until he sold it to his brother-in-law, James Fenton, in 1827. Fenton's family ran the town for many years before they sold it to Charles Goodnight in 1839. Goodnight renamed it Newberry after himself and his sister Sarah Goodnight. The first school outside of Columbia opened in Newberry in 1846. The town experienced some growth during World War II; when Alabama became an independent state, Newberyth sent troops to help fight against Nazi Germany. Many businesses within the town closed during this time, but eventually reopened after the war ended. After Newberyth's incorporation as a city in 1987, many new businesses have opened up within its limits; such as restaurants and small shops catering specifically to local residents and tourists alike.
