In 1831, Captain John Smith discovered saltpeter deposits in what would later be called “MyrtleBeach” which led to its name being chosen as the site for an early commercial harbor known as “Fruitport” due to its high concentration of saltpeter resources. In 1840, James Gist purchased 5 acres of land at present-day Canal Street near where State Street meets US 1A for $1 per acre; this site became known as Gistown after him. In 1868, Gistown was incorporated as a town under the name Redstone Arsenal because troops stationed there during World War II used redstone blocks to build roads and other infrastructure across America In 1886, Postmaster General George Washington Carver donated land east of Moultrie Boulevard for a new post office which eventually became known as Myrtle Beaches post office In 1962, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of downtown Myrtle Beaches with winds up to 155 mph (249 km/h). One year later, local businessman Roy Jowers donated land along modern day US 1A between State and Union Streets to create an open-air shopping mall which eventually became known as Jowers Center Just before World War II ended, Postmaster General William Hance gave approval for construction of a military airfield adjacent to Gistown; this airport would eventually become known as Beaufort Air Force Base After V-E Day in 1945 Allied forces closed down much of American industry due to wartime restrictions on heavy metal production so that factories could be converted into military purposes By 1948 it had rained so much that many streets were impassable through rainwater runoff so developers began developing several neighborhoods around present day Interstate 95 which included parts of today’s downtown Myrtle Beaches . Development continued until 1955 when all inland waterways within city limits were closed following creation of Beaufort County ; this left downtown with only canalside street traffic .
