Myrtle Beach is a town in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Myrtle Beach is located on the Beaufort River and has been known for its white-sand beaches and historical attractions since 1853. The town became a city in 1933 and again in 1998. Myrtle Beach is home to the South Carolina State Capitol building, as well as several other state government buildings. The area that nowincludes Myrtle Beach was first settled by English colonists in 1729. Captain James Cook landed here on his third voyage of exploration in 1778, and named it Fort Caroline after Prince Charles Edward Stuart, who had earlier visited this part of America. In 1823, settlers from North Carolina began arriving here to build cotton plantations; they named the town Beaufort after King George III's brother-in-law, who had bought the land from the native Cherokee people. Beaufort County was formed on February 12, 1825, when Charleston Plantation was divided into two parts – one containing Beaufort County (north) and another including Elizabeth City (south). Elizabeth City became an incorporated city on January 1, 1893; however, it did not become a member of the new county until November 3rd of that year when it merged with neighboring Wilmington. At that time both cities were part of Union County but were dissolved upon its creation within Beaufort County on July 21st 1898 under then Governor Andrew Johnson’s Executive Order No. 6887 which designated all towns within Beaufort “cities or villages” without vote by residents or referendum except for Elizabeth City which continued to be an unincorporated community until 1935 when it joined with Wilmington to form Municipal Borough #2 of Myrtle Beach District No. 2 represented by Mayor Harry Witherspoon On December 5th 1932 voters approved annexation of nearby Parkersburg into borough status thereby making Myrtlebeach a full member municipality On October 15th 1977 following passage of Act 9247 et seq., Townalities authorities were created within Municipality boundaries effective January 1st 1978 providing for local government services including elections and referendums such as zoning ordinances In 1984 Industry Store Incorporation purchased land adjacent to SR 710 just east of downtown from DEP Land Trust thru easement agreement
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the county seat of Ashley County. The population was 28,827 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1876 by General James K. Polk as Fort Myrtle Beach on the Ashley River after it was captured from the Confederate States during the American Civil War. It became a cotton port and developed into a large slave-owning town with over 100,000 slaves before emancipation in 1865. After Reconstruction, Myrtle Beach became an industrial center with manufacturing of textiles, plastics, shipbuilding and other businesses until it lost its status as a major city during the 1990s recession when waves of moving to larger cities replaced traditional job growth in industry. The first black person to be elected to office in South Carolina was William Hosea Coleman in 1988.
