Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a town in Lee County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 12,872 at the 2010 census. Myrtle Beach is the largest city in Lee County and the third-largest municipality in South Carolina. It is part of the Charleston– Myrtle Beach–Forsyth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first guns were brought to this area by General James A. Winchester during the American Civil War. In 1868, Captain Denny of HMS "Beagle" became one of the first people to purchase land in what is now Myrtle Beach when he purchased 126 acres (40 hectares) on which he built a cabin and named it Fort Myer. There was no real governing body until 1887 when commissioners were appointed to manage affairs within the community while General John Cade served as its mayor from 1889 to 1893. The town's official name changed from Fort Myer to Myrtle Beach Municipal Court on October 15, 1899 after Mayor Wm Hargrave donated three thousand dollars for an addition to court house that would seat twenty-four judges and cost $1400 per annum instead of having seats available for only twelve judges which increased costs each year because of inflationary increases in prices on goods and services subject to tax assessment within municipal limits! In 1922, businessman Henson Ames donated land next door on Royal Road for a new Naval Air Station; eventually known as Ellington Field AFB after him and his wife Irene Ewing Ames who played an important role in developing RAF Myrtle Beach into one of America's top military bases! The field became operational May 10th 1946 with P-51 Mustangs flying various missions over Vicksburg during World War II! After the war ended there continued operations at Ellington Field AFB including support roles through most of the Cold War era focusing primarily on Offshore Missile Defense Operations off North Korea until disbanding in 1992! The airport closed permanently on July 1st 1989 due to budget cuts mandated by then President George H Bush following allegations of government corruption throughout much of America!. Since then Ft Myers NAS has been providing aviation services out east under lease from MSA Airlines with plans underway for a permanent facility completion by 2020! Today fort Myers NAS provides hangar space for Military Airlift Command cargo planes operated out of Charlotte Amalie airport handling cargo such as ammunition andMakela medical supplies all without ever leaving shoreline airspace!. Ft Myers NAS also houses two Marine Corps airfields: Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort (MCAS Beaulieu) located near downtown Beaufort just south off US 11E & US 41W & MCAS Jacksonville (Jax), homeported at Naval Air Station Jacksonville since 1942 with F/A-18 Hornets based there currently conducting Strike Missions against Isis targets inside Syria!. Both Marine Corps airfields are used extensively by Helicopter pilots operating outoftheouthis mainland USA Specialty Units like Delta Force etc...
