Myrtle Beach is a town in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Ashley River within Beaufort County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 382 and it is the county seat of Beaufort County. The town began as a small frontier village named Myrtle Beach after Mount Pleasant in North Carolina, but it quickly became an important naval station on the Atlantic coast and grew into one of the most popular tourist destinations in America. The area that now Myrtle Beach was first settled by Native Americans who hunted game along the riverbanks. The first European to visit what is now Myrtle Beach was Lieutenant John Smith in 1718 when he sailed downriver from Charleston to explore new areas upstream. He called this area "Mount Pleasant" because he thought it resembled a mountain near his plantation at Mount Pleasant Plantation onorry Creek which he had just discovered. By 1736, there were over 100 white people living in present-day Myrtle Beach and its environs - most of them indentured servants working for British colonists who built Fort Duquesne on Hilton Head Island as part of their effort to control the lower Ashley River valley and protect shipping lanes between Virginia and Georgia. In 1819, when Congress created Beaufort County, they included present-day Beaufort County within it (and also added 1/4 acre (0 hectare) to FortDuquesne). At first these early settlers did not know what they were getting themselves into - land that was swampy and full of trees would be tilled only for corn or other crops; there would be no industry or commerce here yet! But soon enough they realized that this was some very rich land with plenty of timber resources available so they started building homes, churches, schools and businesses - all while trying to keep up with rapid population growth around them! By 1838 more than 300 white people lived in Myrtle Beach proper while another 600+ lived scattered throughout various outlying settlements including: Mount Pleasant Landing; Myra Landing; Muddy Creek; Cartersville; Brownsville; Fearnysport; Georgetown Court House; Green Gables Ferry Landing & Port Royal Ferry Landing ery where boats took passengers across Ashley River during times when water levels were high enough for travel ery before being replaced by pirogues due to low water levels ery during high tide! In fact even today many residents still use these names today !! Today's downtown core contains several old buildings dating back to this era including: First Baptist Church (built 1840); Union Hotel (1850); Methodist Episcopal Church (1860), Stonington Presbyterian Church (c 1876), Ft Duquesne Naval Station Museum(established 1923), etc.. Banks like United States National Bank Building remain from pre-Civil War days ery around town even though city Limits were set by General Assembly at time limits prescribed by ordinance passed 2nd Session Of General Assembly On March 2nd 1865!! This ordinance provided “that no person shall erect any house or structure whatever within four hundred rods [of] each other…except such houses as may be used for public meeting…or for swell shopskeeping”!!! After Reconstruction ended following Civil War many whites moved away leaving African Americans behind who gradually regained power over their lives through political activism beginning with boycotts against white merchants beginning in earnest starting about 1870s culminating with successful mass movement led by William Evers effective 1933 known as “ Negro Spring”
