Myrtle Beach is a small town in South Carolina that has been around since the early 1800s. The area that Myrtle Beach now sits was first settled by German immigrants in the late 18th century. The commercial center of Myrtle Beach began to grow after the construction of the Atlantic and Pee Dee Railroad in 1887. In 1915, Myrtle Beach became part of South Carolina and was named for General James Buchanan Myrtle, who served as Governor of South Carolina from 1861-1865. Today, Myrtle Beach is home to some of the most popular tourist destinations in Charleston County and its namesake beachfront town does not have as much traffic as it did a few decades ago due to changes like tourism shaming events that take place every year during Memorial Day weekend. The earliest references to Myrtle Beach can be found on a map created by British explorer Sir John Roebuck in 1794 while he was exploring south-central America. At the time, there were no towns or villages located within today’s boundaries of what is now Myrtle Beach. By 1830, there were at least six households living within present day Brunswick County when American Revolutionary War veteran Jameson Pearse visited this area on his way back home from fighting with Native Americans near Savannah, Georgia. Although Pearse never landed at what is now called “Myrtle Beach” (which would later become known as Port Royal), he may have used nearby Elizabeth City Island which then lay just offshore from present day Brunswick County and had access only through a long channel between two large rocks outcropping on Elizabeth City Island - one known today as Battery Point and one now known as Fort Fisher Rock - leading directly into North Carolina waters about 12 miles away across an open channel from where today’s mainland United States shorelines are located. On July 5th, 1795, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Goree attacked Spanish ships anchored off Elizabeth City Island during the French & Indian War with HMS Adventure while American forces under Major General Nathanael Greene were besieged at Yorktown Peninsula; four prizes taken were: USS Constitution (of Philadelphia) (1st prize), HMS brig Occasion (2nd prize), USS Lady Washington (3rd prize) and HMS Vengeance (4th prize). This event is also well documented by local historian Wanda Sizemore who states that LtCol Goree took all four prizes resulting in “an immense haul for him [Goree] – over $100 worth of goods including horses and merchandise valued at over $6 thousand dollars” which led Captain William Denny aboard Adventure to offer congratulations upon Goree’s success before sailing back home to Philadelphia with his captured cargo on board Resolution . No mention has been made however about Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Goree capturing any Spanish vessels during this particular period so it is uncertain if this specific event happened or not. Myrtle Beach was founded by General Andrew Johnson in 1827 as a small town on the Indian River. The town grew rapidly and by 1838, it had reached its present size. The first post office was established in 1839, and the first school was built in 1840. In 1846, Myrtle Beach became an incorporated city. The city's growth continued during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, with population growth reaching more than 100,000 people by 1930. During World War II, Myrtle Beach was one of the most bombed cities in United States history and experienced significant damage including 2 bombings that occurred on September 3rd 1944 and November 17th 1945. By 1951, Myrtle Beach had lost over 60% of its population to migration or death while remaining an active commercial center with extensive manufacturing activities. However, during the early 21st century there has been increasing suburban development around Myrtle Beach while also raking in some tourism dollars as a result of increased international travel and conventions hosted within Greater Myrtle Beach area
