Myrtle Beach is a city in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, United States. The population was 109,391 at the 2010 census. Myrtle Beach has been called "The New Orleans of the South" for its ties to Hurricane Katrina. It is also the home of The University of South Carolina and Beaufort County Regional Airport. Myrtle Beach was founded by white Americans who migrated from North Carolina during the early 19th century. The city's name comes from a beach on Cape Hatteras which they called ""MyrtleBeach"" because local sand was so red that it looked like myrtle trees in bloom. In 1837, Englishman John Jervis built a small seaside resort here on Big Island near where modern day downtown Myrtle Beach stands today as part of his new country estate known as Jervis Island. In 1906, General Robert E Lee and his wife Mamie were visiting friends in nearby Charleston when they decided to move to this area and start their own plantation business, Hardee’s Hotel & Plantation (later renamed Lee’s Restaurant). They bought about 2/3 mile (1 kilometer) south of present-day downtown Myrtle Beach on State Street and started makingroads through what would become known as "The Beaches". Within a few years, most alluvial soils along US 11 had been exhausted and development had begun with sawmills, brickyards, breweries and other businesses moving into areas now occupied by shopping centers or office parks: Sunrise Boulevard between Commercial Drive and US 11A; Broadwalk Avenue NE between US 1st Street and 3rd Street; Park Avenue between Broadwalk Avenue NE and State Street; then back down towards US 11A after crossing State Street again). By 1915 much of present-day downtown Myrletebeach was developed with several large hotels - Hardee's being one – continuing until 1945 when World War II interrupted development plans. During World War II Thurgood Marshall served as an attorney at Hardee's while he prepared for hearings before the U.S Senate Judiciary Committee charged with examining Japanese nationals living in America (the Espionage Act of 1917). When Pearl Harbor happened Marshall flew to Japan immediately upon learning about it on September 6th 1941 to brief Emperor Hirohito on American policy regarding Japanese citizens residing in America without proper documentation Marshall helped change American policy towards Japan so that many former Imperial Japanese soldiers were not arrested or subject to trial but chose instead repatriation through various channels including education opportunities in the United States or work offers within Allied forces liberated from Japan such as those at Bataan Peninsula . This action solidified American support for International Refugee Policy beginning during World War II which aimed to help displaced persons find safe haven throughout Europe
Myrtle Beach is a town in and the county seat of Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 34,053 at the 2010 census. Myrtle Beach is located on the Intracoastal Waterway and is bordered by Charleston to the north, Tybee Island to the east, and salt water marshes to the south. The first permanent settler in what would become Myrtle Beach was James Fenton who came overland from Georgia in 1795. In 1819 bolder entrepreneurs such as John C. Calhoun founded what would become known as "Fenton's Landing". That year Fenton bought a tract of land on which he built a shrimp packing plant called "Queen's Harbor" (later known as "Myrtle Beach"). In 1825 Fenton married Jennie Burchill who had moved with him from Savannah, Georgia. They purchased an additional plot of land on which they erected a home that still stands today – now known as Mrs. Fenton's House – while also starting a small grocery store next door. Their two children were born here: James Calhoun Fenton (1826-1920) who became attorney general of South Carolina under Governor Brigham Young and later served in World War I and II; and Barbara Davenport Fenton (baptized December 12th, 1830), who became one of America’s most famous authors for her books about life at sea including “Life onboard HMS Beagle” and “The Cruise around Cape Horn” In 1849 Judge Hugh Laughlin arrived from Ireland with his family and soon began farming local land near present day downtown Myrtle beaches location where hebuilt his house Gullah country Club which remains standing today
