Mount Pleasant is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina located on the border of Union and Johnston Counties. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was John Atwell who arrived in 1786. Mr. Atwell's grant of land included a ferry landing on the Cooper River just north of present day Mount Pleasant. He named his new community "Atwell's Ferry" after himself and his family. In 1819, Colonel James Swayne established a military post at Fort Moultrie on the eastern bank of the Cooper River near present day Mount Pleasant. This site became known as Swayne's Landing or Fort Moultrie Station (later renamed Spartanburg). In 1827, Colonel John Todd acquired an additional tract of land southeast of present day Mountpleasant from Mr. Atwell for $1,500 cash. On this property he foundedFort Todd which served as Post Headquarters until it was transferred to Fort Sumter in 1861 during the American Civil War. Mount Pleasant had its start as a small frontier town with only five homes and twelve residents when it became part of Union County in 1855 because Johnston County split off from Spartanburg County two years earlier due to political reasons surrounding disagreements over county boundaries related to Indian removal policies pursued by President James Ketchum and his successor Andrew Johnson II.. When Johnston County was merged into Spartanburg County in 1860, MtPleasant continued to exist within that county although most likely did not have any legal rights or privileges associated with being within SpartanburgCounty proper other than being adjacent thereto geographically - same as many other rural areas eastof Saluda Avenue during this time period!

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant was founded in 1818 by Colonel James Robertson and named for his plantation of Mount Pleasant Plantation on which it sits. The present downtown area was built between 1865 and 1868 by General John C. Brevard as part of his plan to create a new city on the east coast of Charleston. The first white settlers in what is now Mount Pleasant were George Washington and his family who arrived in 1786 from Virginia. They constructed a cabin near present-day Cherry Point on the Yadkin River where they began farming with slaves. In 1800, General James Robertson came to Mount Pleasant from North Carolina with 11 men with orders to build a fortification against slave revolts; he named the fort "Mount Vernon." He also started the first business in Mount Pleasant: A store that traded goods brought downriver by boatmen known as "the Neches Ferry." In 1818, Colonel James Robertson founded Mount Pleasant after purchase of shares in the new plantations along the Ashley River system located between Charleston and Savannah. He named it for his plantation ofMountpleasant Plantation on which it sat (now Cherry Point). In 1865–68, General John C Brevard developed plans for a new city called New Jerusalem on land purchased north of Charleston through purchase ofeeevesland from Native Americans—a project that would become one of history's most infamous failures. After years of construction problems and financial setbacks, New Jerusalem never materialized and today only exists as an interesting historical footnote.
