The Mount Pleasant telescope, built in 1881 by Samuel Morse and brothers Alfred and George, was the first operational telescope in the United States. It was located on Mount Pleasant Hill in rural South Carolina, about 20 miles from Charleston. The observatory operated for 36 years before it was destroyed by a fire. The rebuilt Mount Pleasant telescope reopened in 1902 and continued to be used until 1916. It was then donated to the University of South Carolina and is now part of the university's physics department. The original Mount Pleasant telescope had a 3-in.- aperture mirror with a focal length of 30 feet (9 meters). It consisted of two orthogonal mirrors that were brought together so that they focused on one another at an angle of 45 degrees. This allowed for an improved resolution as well as better brightness control than earlier telescopes. In 1881, Samuel Morse founded the American Astronomical Society and donated his new telescope to its membership. By 1902, there were over 50 amateur astronomers across America using various types of telescopes including mountaintop scopes such as this one. In 1916, after World War I ended, the US government placed restrictions on amateur astronomy because some devices being used for spying had been developed by these same enthusiasts! But despite these difficulties, many amateurs continue to use telescopes today thanks to their ingenuity!

It used a triplet eyepiece and was very easy to use. The first modern telescope was the “Kepler”, which was created by Johannes Kepler in 1610. This telescope had a Schmidt-Cassegrain eyepiece and it allowed for much greater resolution than any earlier scopes. However, it also required expensive equipment and took many years to become popular. The development of photography helped make optical telescopes more affordable, and they began to be used more frequently in the 19th century. In 1827, Alexander von Humboldt built the first practical astronomical observatory in Germany, which allowed for great advances in astronomy. During this time, optical telescopes became increasingly powerful as technology improved. By 1881, there were over 1 million instruments operating at various institutions around the world using optical astronomers alone!

Nevertheless, it has continued to be an important cultural and social center in Pickens County since that time.
The first white people to live in Mount Pleasant were the Catawba Indians. They arrived in 1698 and built their own village on the mountain. The present day town was founded by settlers in 1800. The first post office was established in Mount Pleasant in 1824. The town became a state capital in 1889 and is now known as Columbia, South Carolina.
