Mount Pleasant, South Carolina was once a center of shooting and target practice. The town was founded in 1827 by General Andrew Jackson, who established the west bank of the Ashley River as his military camp and also developed this area into a shooting ground for riflemen and artillerymen. There were two main types of target holders used in Mount Pleasant at this time: those using tripod mounts to hold targets horizontaly or vertically, and those with swivel mounts to allow target movement side-to-side or up-and-down. The use of these type of holders allowed shooters to train on both stationary (horizontal) and moving (vertical) targets. The first permanent Target Holder Facility was built in 1892 by Geo Hargrave, who had been hired by Colonel John Witherspoon to develop this new type of holder. This structure consisted of two frame buildings joined by a beltane arch that supported an iron frame with a number of walnut posts attached to it; each post held two round shields that could be rotated to provide different target positions. The town became an important supply center for Confederate forces as they fought against Union troops during the American Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, many Southern whites moved to North Carolina while many African Americans lived in poverty and sickness after years of brutal treatment by white supremacists during Reconstruction. In 1887, Mountpleasant became a community with a water tower and began to grow when Mechanic Manufacturing Company built a factory there that continues to operate today. In 1922, Southeastern Electric Railway established its system here connecting towns east and west of Spartanburg with downtown Greenville via electric railways; this gave rise to local businesses name such as GEICO (now GE) and AT&T (now Time Warner). In 1962, First National Bank merged with First Trust & Savings Bank bringing about improvements to banking services available through nearby restaurants like Checkers Unlimited as well as new housing developments such as Pinnacle Hills Estates/Mount Pleasant Place which later opened into BellSouth Parkland Shopping Center which contains major stores such as Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears), Macy's Inc., JCPenney Co., Kohl's Corp., Stein Mart Stores Inc., Anthropologie Department Store etcetera among others along with numerous other businesses located within walking distance of each other making it one of the largest shopping areas in south central SC today! Today Mountpleasant still has much going for it including some great retail options plus excellent schools including Spartanburg County Community College – fine arts program - Westboro Baptist School also located here
